Hi all,
I created this (imho) masterpiece i'm so proud of:
It is rendered in bryce with a poserdragon. If I got flamed because of the poserdragon I just ignore it, look at the image not the techniques.
The image was rendered in bryce but without the trees.
I've been painting for 4 hours on this image to get the trees grasses and waterfalls. That's longer then any of my digital paintings took.
Anyway I would love to get some feed-back of you guys. There are such great artists here.
for those who visit renderosity or 3dcommune, yes I only imitate the style of Andy Simmons aka Hobbit I hop to get my own style, but I'm nineteen so I got lot's of time to develop one.

Dude, first of all, it really doesn't matter at all how you accomplish something. That doesn't go only for creating artworks, but anything else as well.
Possible regulations regarding style and techniques depend only from the media, the context of your work and questions of moral/taste and culture.
Lemme give you some examples: Imagine you'd do an artwork by smearing the blood of a sacrificed virgin all the way along a wall. Now the question is - when, where and why did you do that? Let's assume the answer was 2002/Central Park/persuasion. Even in case the result is truly fine art, the public won't probably react to it that way. You're gonna be treated like the crazy bitcha$$ you are and thrown into jail and/or mental home. If ya had done the same shit some thousands of years ago as a member of a martial native tribe, chances are you would have been praised for your efforts and been treated like some kinda archpriest.
To get back to your pic - we have people from both of the worlds around, some will consider you as a cheap mofo, and others like some kinda omnipotent entity. The truth lies somewhere between those extremities. If that's your style, it's allright.
But you should think over making a better use of the advantages of 3D/2D workflow. The lighting is nice and the proportions of the dragon are convincing, but the ground looks, typically for (relatively simple) 3d sceneries, very monotonously and blurry. Tighten up yo pic by overpainting it with details, like plants or cracks or stones and debris and I-dun-know-what. You did a great job on the creek and the trees, dude - now go for enhanced eye candyness!!1
P.S.: Check yo private messages, plz.

I don't give a crap where the dragon comes from, it looks like ass compared to the rest of the scene.
That's the main prob when using 'borrowed' material - it doesn't match your styles or skills, and sticks out.
Paint or model your own dragon and I'm sure the image as a whole will be a hundred times better. The rest of the scene is pretty great! |

It's funny you mention that. This dragon model comes with about 100 morphs, 8 tupes of tail, pose is by me, texture completely adjusted... In short this is not some default, but every result rendering this dragon looks diferent, You can give him fins, a ridge of spikes in the mid or two on the sides or both combined, possibilities are endless. |

I like the background.
The pose of the dragon looks stiff.
Like it's a colored stone....
But the background....like I said...very cool !!! |

It isnt bad, the dragon just sticks out from the rest of the image. Try to meld it into the atmosphere a bit more... especially the tail. You did a good job of shaping the environment around it, just finish the job by putting him in the environment. You might also consider adding a reflection in the water... and doing more with the transparent wing.
My 5 dollars. |

99% of the people who look at art really don't care how it was created. I think that style-wise the piece could use some tweaking, as was outlined by other people in this thread, but what strikes m, as needing the most work is the composition. Your focus point is dead center in the composition, and you are looking at it from a very uninteresting angle. The dragon is simply 'there' (very static). Since you are using a 3d program as a base then try using a more dramatic camera angle, not something fake, but something that gives some sort of mood to the dragon. If you applied your existing skills to something with a more dramatic composition (even with the same dragon and environment), it would really stand out. |

Gee, thanks for all that feed-back... It's usefull!! Back to the drawingboard for me

Sorry I didn't reply, I had seen it, but I'm not really with you. I personally think that my image makes more tension, the eruption is about to start... with your's it almost at it's end. I could use a bit more red maybe, but yours is overdone imho
Ok I'll try to work on the pose and make the composition more interesting, I got a sketch lying for a second one, so I want to get to that one as fast as possible
The next idea is the same dragon without wings, with a mebrane as tail end, and spikes on his lower jaw, and much else, he is curved around some rocks in a sort of lizzard pose...And he would make the curve in the left bottom, while looking into the scene. He would lead your eye to waterpool where a unicorn is drinking. Would he capture it I can't wait to start, why hasn't a day 100 hours?

That looks great. Though I must say one thing bothers me: I always though of fireballs and these kinds of energy expressions as a part of the human (or else) abilities, never seen such dragon
Well, except that, that's a great piece and it shows that you've put a lot of time to it. |

I would agree the dragon looks stiff. The bryce landscape however is quite excellent. It's good to see someone who actually takes into consideration lighting and atmospheric details and thus creates a convincing setting, rather than just throw down some mountains on random colored ground with a random sky and haze and fog all over and.. gosh I didn't mean to rant. Just irritating is all.
Good job on yours. |

To my opinion the wings are perfect and the textures are just right. |

Alright, I understand your point of view legolas.
Ofcourse it's your decision how it has to look like.
I just liked the pic and tried to make my version of it.
If it's better or not isn't so important....
cheers |
