yeah, another portrait...starting to slow down while doing them ;I'm spending more time watching, and less painting it.
Anyway, though you guys might be bored of them, so I've put some cards art I did for warhammer...What about that for a nice change of mood, uh ;-)
these are the original versions I did, had to tweak some of them, later on.
Kill them all

This is all sick. For some reason I dont like your lack of detail around the eyes of the girl and warhammer marines, too simplified or simplified wrong. Of course I spend too much time on eyes, so maybe I should quiet down. Other than that I like them lots. Maybe more tonal contrast. I was wondering if you draw your stuff first. I always do but am wondering if I should make the transition to paint only. What do you think? |

I actually like the simplification. I imagine the images might look a little better with slightly more detail in certain areas but as they stand I think they are well done. I especially admire simplification because it is something I can't do effectively. I'm a detail monger, even though I know detail doesn't mean good art.
Was simplification something you had to work on or something you started with? |

Mr , Max Kulich, thanks!
Mitch : thanks for your input. If I draw something first ( not always with personal art, you have to on comissioned works )It's more about the construction of the image than details and all that. I've attached the sketch for one of the warha image. maybe too much details for being typical of my way of drawing, actually. when doing a portrait (If I sketch ) less details, just point of references for proportions. this is not a method, just ways I work with, and they change greatly depending of the piece, and with time and new experiences I do.
Try to paint directly, it won't kill you. if you hate it, so what, stop. Keep in mind it should be fun to do.
Micke: You busy man ;-) no problemo :-)
Gimbal8: Thanks! u'r right with some more details here and there, actually. next ones maybe.
I've worked a lot on cards art these last years, and they're printed so small I had to change the way I worked on those, to get where I wanted to go. So my personal works changed, too. it's always changing, see, for a variety of reasons. If I was working again on character designs I would put way more details, or jobs in animation would probably drive more into precise colors ...etc etc. it's a constant learning process.
edit : oops, forgot Silber : thanks!

You have to say, to me, it looks like your commissioned work lacks the spontaneity and lushness of your personal work. I'm a huge fan of yours, and have been for years. I think with your commissioned work, the uniqueness that is "beet" is gone.
You know what I mean? |

Lunatique : Well, hard for me to put a judgement on that, isn't it? At the end of the day, I did them all, for the better or the worse( and sometimes the commissioned ones are the good guys, while sometimes the personal ones turn into evil crap, btw )
On different levels, of course, they're all part of the same process, for me. Thanks+peace :-) |

Dang. Someone already used the word 'lush' today...
Awesome work beat. Always enjoy your posts. Would perhaps like to see a little more atmospheric blending of surfaces (i.e., more light and snow reflecting off armour etc., as it looks a little 'plastic-y'). Nice work. |
