Craig- Are you painting straight with the default tools in Painter? If you are, that might be the reason why you still feel like it's kicking your ass. If you haven't already, try playing around with the brush controls. Messing with resaturation, bleed, feature..etc is one of the best things about Painter IMO. They give you far more control in how you want your brushes to behave than Photoshop EVER could.
It's funny how you feel that Painter is kicking your ass, yet you turn around and kick us all in the nuts with your brilliant speed paints. ![](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

look! it's evil Jesus! It only stands to reason...
this is a real live painting of an old sketch I did. No reason I picked this one, but it was not a good choice, as it has some difficult anatomy, and you are more responsible for stuff in paint. Or rather, I don't have as many tricks to hide ignorance. Yet. Hopefully. The scan is really terrible, the shiny surface makes it impossible to get it even close. Mostly the dark areas go away, and that is the real strength of oil to me, the huge value range from mid dark on down.
edit- lunatique- yes, I am using the out of the box axes. I guess I am impatient to get something done so I just put up with it. I play around with the variables you mentioned, but the results seem to make no sense at all. Pretty random. I will keep at it.

Color range from mid grey on down....exactly what your regular trinitron monitor does NOT excel in. Perhaps one ought to open the dusty drawers and find some oil paint.
Great work everyone.

This thread is growing so fast, I hardly can follow. I moved to Berlin and therefor I was offline for almost two month. But now Im back with more time on my hands to contribute here...

Hey guys!
I've been going through this thread the last 3 hours. Takes alot of time with my 56k modem... ;D
There is an extreme amount of talent in here, and some of you have improved alot.
Don't even remember everyones pics in this thread(how could I? so many pics).
Here is some c&c for the stuff I do remember ;p
Oblagon: You have improved alot in a short period of time. Saw your posts in the first speedpainting thread a couple of moths ago or so.
Balistic: That demon hound or whatever thingy is really cool!
catahoochee: really like that shotgun grrlie.. nice colors
HaRdC0rePixxX: Kewl stuff
AllOtherPpl: Yum!
I havn't even doodled for months myself, but I'll hopefullt be getting started again soon. I've started writing a new RPG (d&d style.. dragons elves and stuff) with a couple of friends, and we will be needing tons of scetches of everything so I'll be getting alot of practise soon ![](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

Spooge- A lot of awesome Painter artists(mostly over at conceptart) seem to like a flat covering airbrush(select Digital Airbrush, open the options for it and make sure the method is cover and the subcategory is flat cover-unless you want a soft brush, then its soft cover...err, yeah). Make sure the spacing is low, about 5%.
A brush I like for drawing(feels good) is a Dry Media/Charcoal with subcategory set to Grainy Hard Cover, grain at about 35%, Size about 4-5, min size 7%, size step 5%, and the Expressions just set to size and opacity for pressure. Gives a nice rough pencil. Be sure to have a good texture selected under Papers in the Art Materials panel.
Dry Ink brush is nice, as is the square chalk tool(gotta have a good set of textures though-I have a 30mb or so file of papers. Opacity=pressure and Angle=direction, grain=8%).
Hey guys, think its almost time for a Speed Painting 3 thread? |

Anthony- Hey, thanks for posting that flat-covering digital airbrush! I've been looking for good simple brush for initial blocking in of colors that's similar to PS's default brushes, and this one is it! Only, it's BETTER because you can set the resaturation and bleed! ![](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |
