Balistic: I like the lighting; The red light bathes the surfaces in warmth and the blue light seems more direct and leaves hot-spots. I would have thought that it would confuse the apperent properties of the surface unless all the lights reacted the same to it. This proves that wrong, and shows I need to be more observant about light and its reactions.

Here is another experiment combining my last two with some adjustments. I think I've landed on a way to start a painting that I like. A couple more experiments and a test run will tell for sure.

balistic- I like the colours, very colourful and vibrant. But, there is no volume man. the figure generally looks flat, little weight. I don't know if you wanted a crit or not. *[bb you just tarnished the speedpainting thread! how so? you don't crit here, they just are loosening up here practicing! Ah, lick my nuts!]*

Hi All,

I am new on this forum. I recently got a hold of a wacom tablet, after years spent saving for it!

Here is an image I painted in 25 minutes, it is a portrait of my wife.

You people are just too good for your own britches.

Is that how you spell britches? I dont know. I think this is the first time I ever typed that word. Wierd....

Anyway, thanks for the comments Balistic. And I think your right about Mullins the human GPU. I think he is a cyborg experiment jointly created by Adobe and nVidia or something.

For some reason working with colors makes me choke to death. The only way I seem to make any progression is working in b&w (click here to see some anal-retentive noodling to the previous pic). I think I need to do some of those excercises like Spooge mentioned one time where you paint a picture with just about any color but just make sure you get the value correct.

Oh ! A sister from the Adeptus Sororita ! How cute she is with her flameguns

Well, this quickie down here is really just that, a 10 minutes exercise in strokes, to get a feeling of what I can do (never tried this style before with Photoshop).
Of course the layout is ugly, but hey, one thing at a time.

A specular highlight is really just a reflection of a lightsource . . . if a lightsource is small, you'll get a nice specular highlight on a wet surface, even if that light isn't particularly intense. Conversely, a large lightsource, no matter how bright, usually won't cast a sharp specular reflection . . . you'll only get diffuse illumination from it.

I spend a lot of time just staring at light . . . doing lighting in 3D helps too. Spend a few years doing photorealism in a package that doesn't support radiosity and you'll eventually start to figure out how light works.

I think Mullins has an extra lobe attached to his brainstem that does it for him though.

lobus illuminata demonica

Your image looks good, btw. I'm definitely reading a luminous volume below the subject. You might consider trying to cast some more distinct shadows from your primary lightsource.

How the hell did RobCamp up there get a one-star rating by posting that single picture?! What kind of welcome is that? "Grumble grumble... some pubescent twat... grumble grumble". It's nicely done, and not at all like the heavily Boris-influenced things you got going on your site. Post more! And oDD, I really like that you've started using more monochrome colour schemes, looks much better!

Ratings mean nothing. If you're truly concerned with your rating on Sijun, you have some self-esteem issues you should work out. If you're concerned with someone ELSE's rating... yea, you get the idea.

Thank you for noticing me and for your desire to see more! Here it is:

Yes, Boris was my main influence about 10 years ago, when I started painting in Oils... but I have been finding my own style since then. Not sure what it is yet though...eh eh.

Anyway, this is a portrait of my daughter Rachel I did a few days ago. It took me 40-45 minutes (believe me, that is way too long when your subject can't stop squirming on her chair!).

I used Fractal painter on a 9x12 Wacom tablet. Thanks for looking.

Wow, I was getting red x's before for some reason. Now your stuff comes up fine, robcamp. That's really good. Especially in that amount of time. I guess it didn't take long to get used to your wacom, eh?

Hey, those portraits look great, robcamp.
I can't believe you did those in such a sort amount of time. Takes me much longer to paint a decent portrait.

Anyway, thanks for sharing and make sure to turn that stupid rating system off. It's completely pointless.

Take it easy,
~M~

This took me too long. About 1 to 1.5 hours. I hope this is a little better than my last.
