I can't shoehorn this into speed painting...

Here are 4 sketches for a game box for playstation called fireblade, helicopter sim.

They chose one, did this:

(that is a photo out there in the distance, it was just too perfect to not use. I'm really sorry. Won't happen again.

The ancient refrain, object and bg must separate, and always more firebombs, please. So the BG was changed to:

done!

second illo, same project, magazine spread. Started life as one of the above sketches.

You are probably thinking I did not finish it, correct. It got pulled halfway and they taped some of both illos together to make the ad:

since they got what they needed, they did pay me I did not do the composite work.

But ya know, even if I reason in AD logic for a moment, the ad, holding aside the obvious problems of eye level and other nonsense, it looks like the hero copter is taking a SAM in the rear. Oh well.

Hi Spooge!

I very much like the one where we see the copter from the back. And the groundperspective on the 'firebomb' piece is great.
As always you blend the rough, sketchy look with an amazing palette and lighting. Great stuff!

Regarding the helicopter design. Who did it?
The rear looks like a 'Dolphin' ( http://person.emmanuel.free.fr/f-gnof.htm ), but the front looks sorta' clumsy, and it seems to be a breed between a freighter and a rescuer.

I won't even speak of the composite witch I think is pretty....well, annoying.

Always a pleasure

argh, why did they have to have an orange background with the final pic. the one with the photo is pretty much my favorite painting from you. lower half of the ground looks very abstract, but doesn't look cheesy.

how did you lay out the perspective guidelines on the copters? 3d or by hand?

LOL, I read the post before looking at the user-name. Guess what I thought halfway!?! "Man, this is kinda Craig-quality"

Craig, with this piece, you kicked the "jungle knight" down from the 1st place of my favourite paintings!

Their first choice was great, No.4 was my favourite sketch aswell. How do you make this nice "fluffy" and thick smoketrails on the ground? It really looks like burning kerosine!

Nice work */saves*

These are truly amazing. I was just curious why you were pulled halfway through the project? Are some clients really that difficult to please?

Wow yeah, great stuff. I *adore* that forth sketch -- so much mood.

Interesting how much your "finished" work is looking like John Berkey these days.

Awesome work, Craig. The illo from behind the chopper is my personal favorite, and in fact is my new desktop bg.

What's funny is I saw the pic of the chopper from the front(with the red bg) on gamewallpapers.com and I thought, "Man, that looks just like Craig's work." Heh.

Oh, and btw, Craig, I was wondering if you'd be interested in adopting me and teaching me your ways.

Wow, just picked my jaw up off the floor. I love them all especially the one with extra-added fireballs. I agree with EviLToYLeT that the composite doesn't look so good. Heaven forbid they leave the artists work alone huh.

Dimn...it's good to see you postin' again Craig. Yeah, I remember coming across that pic but didn't realize it was you who painted that. Nice piece anyhoo.

BTW, I got "shined-on" on Matrix 2. They were going to fly me up to Alameda and 2 days before I was told da art dept. filled up.
Man, that's just crappy...dunno who was responsible for dat. But, I have some ideas..yo.

Nice stuff spooge. It's a shame it got all warped in the final image like that. It was probably a bigger slap in the face if you did a bunch of grid/perspective work for both of those.

I never heard anything about it but I saw the cover of the Obi-Wan X-box game that looked like your painting you did way back.. only it was colorized green. What happened with that? Sorry if you've answered that question a million times already I've been living under a rock for a long time

Nice to see your stuff again.

What can I say? Amazing as usual..

I think it's horrible that an artist of your caliber has to have his work chopped up and pasted back together in order to achieve the client's final "vision", but as you said..... at least you got paid.

Again, all I have is praise. Great work, Craig.

Take it easy,
Malachi

Stunning work, Craig. It's a pity to see them having done that to your pictures, though... I wish they would've gone with fb_final1.jpg, though - that was my absolute favourite of the lot =]
