Hello, just thought I could post this one, since I just added it to my page as well.
It's a cover I did for the game Anarchy Online. This cover went through quite some changes while painting as well as on the sketching in the beginning. Which it wasn't really time for, so the actual painting part of it had to go really quickly....I need to learn how to handle that type of process better, when the client have bigger changes in the middle of the process, I usually end up doing more bad than good to the picture. But, I hope it'll work well on print anyway. Oh well, enough talking...

Like the girl in the middle but the rest isn't that impressive. Looks like mixing of different environments. Well I found that you usually spent 20% of your time doing 80% of the painting, and 80% of your time takes all those little damn tweaks. As for the clients and changes... well you're doing commercial art, so be ready for that pain. Sad but true. Be flexible as well.

nice work Joachim esp if it was changed half way through. you still manage to make it look good.
I really liked that omega world pic you posted too. just too slack to post sometimes=/
I wouldn't think of it a failing on your part in terms of changes half way through. it should never happen. and if it does prolly make a new contract with different terms. I should prolly whinge in spooge's thread, but digital art brings the worst out in this kind of situation. everyone thinks you can change everything anytime=/ a painting in like a house of cards:P you don't go fuking around with it once it's half built. might fall down.
coming from a graphic design background as far as my commercial teachings go, I view changes (after aproval of the stage where you would normaly decide that part of the image) as a big issue. the change has to be of such significance that the risk of making the whole image/design not work, is better than having it stand as is. otherwise just leave it.
it seems that in commercial art people see them as acceptable. I don't really understand why. |

Hi Joachim, long time no see.. I'm finally back to Canada after one year in Japan :O
Very nice pic! I like to see stuff you draw and I can see you put some time and effort into it.. Always inspiring. Lately I haven't been drawing, and I think I will regret it because I will lose alot of time.
Although, if you don't mind me saying, or maybe you already know about it, I don't fancy the big guy's chest so much.. hrmm, it's not planned out enough I think.
But otherwise, nice to see you posting again. Will look forward to seeing some of your stuff soon!
Francis. |

The characters are very nicely painted, but the background is not nearly close to the figures.. you have posted MUCH better work on landscapes than this here. If I wouldnt know it better I would say that someone painted the figures and someone totally else drew the background.
I hope you don't mind honesty, since sometimes I get the impression that a few "established" artists here just don't really care for critcism at all when they post here.
I just post to nag you a bit because I know you can do better. |

Almost forgot to reply to this one.
Thanks! The reaction was sort of expected
chiani, thx for thge compliments.
lomi, thank you ! Yes I agree with you. One of the composition flaws that relaly bugs me.
leo, Thx for being honest about your opinion .. ABout commersial art, I DO know that's the way it works..actually what I said was that I don't mind the industry being that way, I actually enjoy it, because then I have to try to bend my own things into something the client like, without loosing the quality or style. Something I I think is challenging and a very interessting thing about working the commersial field...
rinaldo, thx for the encouragement
I do agree with your points about the business too, but I guess that is one of the parts that makes it good trying to have a client for a while, because then you learn to work with eachother. They will know what to expect and you will know what they want.
Btw, do you still play warcraft3 ? If so, I do play under the name dr.rotten (hehe, I know it's childish ) on the european server. Come one in if you dare challenging me.
fuel_99, THanks, yup I do agree with you. I don't mind honesty, I feel the same way too. And, I will do better
SnakeG, nice to see you back. What did you do in japan btw ?
AGree with your points too. Yes I did put a bit of effort into into, but that doesn't always need to be benefitial for the image. But, it's jobs like this I feel I learn the most from anyway. |

Take a closer look, man:
He's already slicin' her leg! That guy knows how ta treat a lady. Nice pic nevertheless, although the weapon styles and the background setting don't really fit togetha. Keep it real, Joachim. |

I have always really liked your painterly style. This is no exception. Actually, I really like the background. The characters do not have your usual...richness and depth. They are well done, just not up to your usual level. However, if the client is happy then two thumbs up! Great work ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Great work Joachim
The only thing really that I would work on is maybe the hand of the guy on the right. The hand holding the axe. The shadow around the axe is a bit strong.
Whatever happend to your Oil Painting project. Maybe you need another contender
Cheers |
