Had quite a messed up hd crash this last month and unfortunately lost quite abit of work, pretty f*%&in frustrating..
Managed to get myself a new setup so hopefully can get my painting flow back again. Kept busy with sketchbook stuff in the meantime anyway, here's a few pages.
c&c welcome.

Cos! Great sketches. I really like your anatomy rendering/style, a little over the top, but good. The poses are a stiff from time to time, which is perhaps the thing that needs more work on at this point. You're doing great, these are very impressive. Keep it up bro! |

Cool stuff as usual, Cos. I think the second page with the biomechanical zombies is really nice. It's looser and not as stiff as some of the other pages. |

Yes. Fine. I always loved your pics. Especially black and white stuff. What are these sketches for? I mean will they turn to b&w or colors or maybe kind of monochrome? Anyway I'd like to see a final result |

Hi Cos,
I like your work a lot and you draw very well but I have to say that you are becoming very very good at drawing things that look just like the stuff that you drew last year.....
oh well now you all think I'm a d**k but I think it had to be said and to ignore it would be a crime.

Thanks for the comments all
Frost - Yeah, think I just need to get more life drawing in my system really. It's getting better as I go, just need to keep at it.
Sup_ben - Just sketches, with the purpose of pushing on raw drawing ability. I may paint some of them tho.
Go - thanks man, appreciate it.
Shadow - What can I say, I'm not big on flowers and fruit
also here's some quicky ps stuff, trying to get the painting juices flowing again.

Oh my, you really are setting yourself apart, Cos. I actually feel honoured to have been around to witness your progression. I can say "I knew him when..."
You've really become one kickass artist.
Now that I've buttered ya up all nice and greasy like, tutorial? |

Those PS sketches rock!
Especially the Kane ones, wow man. The brush work in that bluish Kane piece totally reminds me of the great Den Beauvais.
Anyway, great work.
Take it easy,

Cos as always I really enjoyed looking at your studies.
Your black and white value studies are visually very, very interesting!
To critique;
The way your characters are presented is very stiff, static if you will. More so, your work shows consistent balance issues. While I am amazed at your knowledge of proportion, anatomy, light and dark; I feel that weight, balance and dynamics is consistently lacking in your work. Each figure lacks certain "finesse".
Certain studies/exercises will really help you abilities and knowledge. For example; do a number of studies based on overly dynamic stances. Be sure to focus on, and be conscious of weight and especially rhythm.
One way to look at a pose/stance is just as another defining aspect of the character, just as you would use:
- Facial features
- Proportion
- Shadow
- Texture
- Etc...
Another good exercise for this is a series of rough movement animation frames. Doing a series of "thumbnails" (Doesn't necessarily need to be thumbnails, Between 5-10 Frames) on one or two pages, show the stride and movement of a character. The drawback to this one is the fact that, it's really hard!
A really good substitute for the aforementioned exercise is studying life. You don't even necessarily have to draw it, just look. Although drawing is always better. Take note of the way people walk/move;
-How do fat people stand/walk?
-Skinny or fit people stand/walk?
-Old people? etc.
For creatures, study the masters (Miyzaki comes to mind). Also grasping a range of basic bone/muscle structures based on different types of animals; Baboons to fish.
Take notes, imagine how they move and twist in space. While doing any of these exercises it is most constructive to consider weight and its relation to line and rhythm into the characters you sketch.
As far a reference is concerned;
-Bridgman's Life Drawing by George B. Bridgman
-Constructive Anatomy by George B. Bridgman
-Some sort of Animal Dictionary/Book. Something simple with skeletal breakdown for a large range of animals.
I purchase these books for 7.00 usd each, brand new. They are great reference and don't let the terrible covers fool you.
Hope it helps. I am not going to write anymore today .

Gandalf - Hey thanks very much for the kind words! appreciated. Always cool when someone has been foloowing your progress from the early sijun days
I still need to put together a a recent painting tut, tho I have some steps for how I do the bw work in ps, if that's of any use.

Malachi - Thanks man! glad you liked 'em. And Cheers for the link, great stuff on that site.
Jucas - Thanks for the extensive c&c, always appreciated when someone takes the time to write so much on my account Alot of interesting input here. At the time I am working more on natural posing etc, I've found life drawing to be the most helpful with this so far. I'm not really a massive fan of overly dynamic poses, stuff like image comics etc, not really my thing.. tho just a matter of taste and preference I guess, I'm sure theres alot of people who like it. I kinda prefer it with a bit more realism and not so over the top (which is what I'm aiming for). Cheers for the book titles, I'll check them out when I get some time, and again thank for taking the time offer your your input and opinion.
Cheers |
