There's some reasons why I make the first sketch bad:

1. It's really, I mean really fast to do so I don't need to stare at white canvas for a long time.

2. There's the overpaint syndrome.. when you haven't looked at something for 20 minutes it's easier to see the mistakes and do big changes.

This image was made only for this tutorial and I tried to keep it really simple so less experienced artists can keep up.

That was it. I like to change the colours as the image progresses, helps to keep me fresh and prevents me of getting bored.

I always use reference for commissioned pieces, but I didn't have time to search any for this one.. but I REALLY recommend getting good references (tons)

Nice on BG! at first i thought you were just messing around when saw the very first stage...i couldnt help but laugh at that frog sketch, those eyes.
but anyway i like the way it all turned out

The red light isnt the most subtle thing ive ever seen, but this is just an example image.
BTW what brush do you use to get that smooth textured effect that can be seen underneath the frog? it looks yummy

BG ... I think the way you use black in your pictures reduces the quality. On a very high level of course.

But maybe that's just me!?

how did you get such straight lines in the better sketch, even on the arms and legs?

and what program did you use to render this in?

Arc][Pello: Thanks! I didn't use any special brushes on this, only default PS 5.5 brushes.
I think I used soft round brush for the area below the frog. The red light is horrible indeed, that's why I put it there

Pixelfuture: You can get straight lines by holding down shift and clicking once the starting point of the line and clicking once where you want it to end. This was painted in Photoshop, version 5.5

I don't have steps for this, but this proves that the concept is the most important, you can survive with a lot less rendering if the concept works...

btw. Can anyone donate some tips for saving images for web? These look much darker on browser than in Photoshop.. adding brightness is a bad solution because it adds greyness to the pic :/ Maybe you all should come to check out these pics on MY monitor

about saving for web: try to disable PS-Color-managment (set it to "Monitor"). I increase the brightness by pulling up a "curve"-adjustment-layer. Don't know, if it adds gray...

yea, i know im a bit late... ok im a lot late Very Happy

but at that time i didnt know this forum excisted. but well... about the colors. if the other tip u got dosnt work u can make an "optical illusion" (i hope:P) i got read it in a book about optical illusions, when u look at a dark color its darker if its sorounded by light, so if u make a darker frame around the picture itself, it will make the picture look brighter. dont know if it works in this situation, but u never know, Very Happy

really cool tutorial. I love the roadkill pic too. on minor crit is that I think the composition of the tut was better before you cropped of the bottom. Also I think it would be a better tutorial if you told what you were thinking in terms of color choices and your reasons you did what you did in the rendering stages.
