Actually, reading your post made me sit back and go "WAH?," and then I was all "No . . . "

The Zigguraut is a weapon designed to disable the technology of rival nations, thereby allowing a takeover of the world by the country of Metropolis.

They only briefly /tested/ it on themselves.

If the story was that fundamentally broken, it wouldn't have survived nearly a hundred years worth of re-makes.

*edit* and also:

OMG!!1!!i was watching ghoast n the shell and it wuz c00l how she got nekid and evrything but then like the hole movie stopped and it was just this weird music 4 10 minuts and i was all like WTFBBQ???!!1!

Ghost in the shell was awesome. The whole Hyper Velocity Bullets, Puppet Master, Hacked Minds, Machanical Implants, Assassinations, Invisible Cloaks, Cool ass Robo-tanks, Awesome art, slick animation. And better yet, The TV series is coming out soon WOOOOHOOOO!!!

Evangelion the movie is another no one has mentioned.

I did in like the 6th post. Evangelion is kinda wierd though, Gainex puts out wierd stuff FLCL comes to mind.
Blood: i was thinking of listing but even though the animation and everything was great, it was pretty short and the vampires(whatever they really were, "demons"?) didn't put up too much of a fight.

ooh, yeah, wings of honneamise is my favourite anime. units... me live in australia too. yipee. i love eva and ninja scroll as well. mononoke was good, but i like miyazaki's other films more.

the problem with akira is that's it's old, and brilliant for it's time. but because a lot of ppl missed it, they compare it to anime now. the other problem is that it's a 1000+ page graphic novel, compressed into one film. obviously the plot suffered.

yes totoro is pure magic

ValarianROOT Pleaz compress youre files their are too big ! the last one got 400 kb !!!!!!!!!

For me Metropolis sucked very much, it was so boring.

Lodoss is cool, but berserk (not so good animation and graphics as lodoss) its better.

And i don't like trigun and evangelion either.

Post some funky anime pics :P

Not a fan but somehow LOVE that anime. Bike scenes are very dynamic and violent. And yeah, everything is drawn by hand.

keredleung, I suggest you to use highlights on bike's panels, to show the form better, now it looks quite flat.

I'm not a big fan of Anime, can we say overdone? Ninja Scroll was the only thing I enjoyed.

Sure... the ok part of the story. The bad part was the revolution (wtf was it about?) the police force of robot killing retards. Yet that didn't really bother me all that much, what bothered me was Tima. Why the hell would you build a computer to rule the world in a body shell with moving arms/ legs and the ability to build emotions? Sounds like a bad idea to me. I dunno, the art, some of the ideas, and the zigg were cool, but this version (if there are other version as you said) of the story I didn't really like.

Also I'm not sure about remakes, I thought it was based on some old sci-fi book/movie(?) by somebody, but I didn't know it was remade so many times. And I'm not saying it's fundamentally flawed, but the anime ver. isn't too good.

Wing os Honneamise is one of my favs. It's one of the few "arthouse" anime ever made.

No one mentioned Dagger of Kamui?! That was a classic! A true masterpiece. I think most people that did see it only saw the butchered American edition.

How about Arion? Yasuhiko's best anime film ever! This one has never been released commercially in the west. Maybe there's a fan-sub version around?

Wings of Honneamise seemed REALLY long. But it was good in parts. I found the music to be rather weird, not sure in a good way or a bad way.

Anyone seen Martian Successor Nadesico? It was decent. Too bad it had the whole "20 hot girls going after one boring guy" thing.

End of Evangelion was the best anime film I've ever seen. Waiting for it to come out in English (September!!).

Serial Experiments Lain kicked ass. What a weird, moody series that was.

Sorry, I don't do a lot of anime fanart so I don't have anything to post.

edit: Oh yeah, keredleung, there's something about your picture that I really like, but I can't put my finger on it. It's unique. Good work.

I love akira and GITS. I saw battle angel alita ages ago and from what i remember it was cool. Being in the UK most anime I have seen was on channel 4 about 7 years ago at like 1 am. I vaguely remember something called devil man and cyber city oedo 808. I remember them being good but i may be incorrect for the reason mentioned above. I bought appleseed a few weeks ago cause i though "oh yeah that had big robot type things in it, cool!" but its pretty lame. It has an interesting commentary though. What about patalabor 1 and 2? i heard they are good.

My favorites:

Ghost in the Shell
Battle Angel (GUNNM)
Princess Mononoke
Kiki's Delivery Service

The new Vampire Hunter D ain't bad, but its not really a classic either.

Jin-Roh is quite good too, but the story is fairly depressing.

Most anime is utter crap . . . I can't believe how much of it is getting translated and sold for $30 a DVD . . . there are maybe 20 or 30 movies worth watching, and the rest of it exists so that fanboys can feel special about being into something "weird" (read: crappy).

Someone mentioned a new project by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko . . . does anybody have more info on it?

Kodiak,

The reason that Tima was built to look and act the way she does is because Duke Red's daughter had died and he wanted Tima (which was most likely his daughter's name) to be just like her.

balistic,

Most anime is utter crap? come on now! What have you been watching?

IMO most anime is great. Of course theres quite a few bad shows just like with anything else, but out of everything i've seen, i've only seen maybe 1 show/movie that disappointed me. My tastes arent too discriminating though, so i like most everything i see

heres a few great shows/movies for ya keredleung:

GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka)
Irresponsible Captain Tylor TV
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Perfect Blue
Rurouni Kenshin (OVA and series)
I My Me! Strawberry Eggs
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Metropolis
Princess Mononoke

akira is my favourite, no doubt. Ghost in the shell has some very nice passages but overall never surpasses Akira.

but then again, the (Akira) movie is sooo shallow compared to the books. Everytime I open one of the books i'm in awe... Best comicbook ever!

oh... and if u see the 'behind the scenes' stuff you'll see that CGI was indeed used in Akira.

I couldn't get myself to read ALL that, so I just have one thing to say:

Ghost in the Shell kicks bootie big time
Rurouni Kenshin (especially the OVA's) are the best manga ever
