or evangelion
Mononoke Hime
Kite
Ninja Scroll
Cowboy Bebop
FLCL
Read or Die
Spriggan
The list goes on and on. I can see if someone has only seen a select few anime how akira could be the best. But it's hard to say which is superior to all. Whenever someone asks me my favorite, it's hard to give just 1. I've found this a problem with a lot of other otaku's.
But that has nothing to do with this picture soooo. Pixel art is usually at like 45 degree angles isn't it? seems like it would be a pain in the butt to do. The background doesnt look very pixelart-ish (the ground mostly) |

Evangelion
FLCL
Cowboybebop
Movies:
Cowboy bebop knocking on heaven's door
Evangelion The end of Evangelion
Vampire Hunter D
Metropolis
and the rest of them all suck don't make me laugh nothing is technically superior than Vampire Hunter D

HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Silly mortals. Of all the "annie-may" out there "Metropolis" and "Akira" are the absolute, I will take no argument, hands down best ever. Both involved Katsuhiro Otomo. Now you have a choice between the two which is the best but... THESE ARE YOUR ONLY CHOICES!!!

Aren't you forgetting X?
I seem to remember that as another damn good anime.
I think that Akira is remembered as the best because for many, it was their first anime.
Really though, it is very good, has an excellent sound track, but the comics are much much better.
Bebop is good, and I dearly love it, but I do not think it is the best...

When I meant technically superior I meant the execution. Akira was fully hand drawn... there was no CG back in 1988.
I bet some of you guys haven't even heard of Grave of the fireflies...
Well, If you haven't you should go watch it...

There was CGI in 1988. It just wasn't very good, or widely used. But I'm just being a smartass. Is VHD: Bloodlust as good as the original? I just got it and haven't had the chance to watch it yet. |

I was sorry that I ever saw Akira. I have no problem with the art, except for the "big blob" scene...
however, I tried very hard to find a plotline in that movie, but it appeared that someone took a big ton of unrelated elements and threw them all in the same pile, calling that pile Akira.
I'm convinced that they made the Matrix after watching Akira. I'm also convinced that the Matrix will forever be better than Akira. Akira simply failed at being deep.
Now, Cowboy BeBop on the other hand *grins* that's a good anime. ![](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |

Incidentally, what does everyone think to the book?
I'm trying to educate myself on graphic novels at the moment - loved Sandman, From Hell, Red Star, Watchmen. Is Akira worth picking up or is it overhyped? |

lol, this thread belongs in the discussion forum.
Cowboy Bebop is a great anime, possibly the best I've ever seen. Close behind it would have to be Trigun. I guess I'm just a sucker for whole wild west scene. |

Cowboy Bebop... got to love it.
by chance anyone know what the name of that one episode were that fat assassin with the mind of a child but with supernatural killing ability is after Bebop,
it all ends is some sort of amusement park.

My GOD!!! Aren't you people listening ONLY TWO CHOICES: "Metropolis" or "Akira." Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust was kinda neat, but was ruined by the TEARABLE dub and inconsistent volume, still nowhere near even Akira, though. Blood: the Last Vampire has nothing on "Metropolis," on that, that's all Ive got to say.
GOTFF: Very disturbing and eye-opening film (My roommate owns the film, bytheway). Its hard not to say this is the best, but... it's not. It and WOH are outstanding films, very likely only lacking in production quality that both Akira and Metropolis received to make them real competition.

Think of it as if you were a shorter dark-haired individual that had nuclear weapons dropped on your country. In that context its a bit more understandable.
Cowboy Bebop: wonderful series, but cannot compare to an OVA or film for production quality. Can't wait to see the film!!!
Trigun... never seen it. No comment.
Evangelion the movie is another no one has mentioned. It has some great fight scenes, particularly the opening sequence! Sorry lacking in substance comparably though.
Jin Roh: Awesome film. Still... nope. A good contestant though (got beat down in the end). Awesome ending by the way.
Spriggan: Great film! Fun in a violent kinda way. Eagerly awaited! Falls short on substance though.
The Akira manga: definitely not over hyped. Explains and expands on character interation and plot extensively. I empathized with the conflict/friendship a lot more in the manga than the movie. This is what the story is mostly about.
So, the execution of Akira and Metropolis, as of yet is untouchable. In fact I never thought Akira would ever have competition after seeing GITS and Blood: The Last Vampire. These two are the some of the more innovative films before Metropolis. But, obviously Metropolis has changed that opinion. Story, interaction of characters, interesting plot development, pacing and production quality of these two films are the unshakable pillars that make them so great.
Hopefully, this comparison gives some perspective in respect to the other wonderful TV series, OVAs and films listed in this post.

P.S. Suma' where are you... this really does belong in Discussion. I always look to find it there, but forget its here. Thanks. |

It started off a gallery thread, I can't move it just because mention of Akira turned into an anime discussion.
Just keep posting art in here from time to time and it'll be cool. |

Loved Kaneda's bike, I was amazed by the design when it first came out.
Poor me living down here in Australia, we're only starting to get a good range of Anime titles now.
Good Call oDD!, we seem to be forgetting Wings of Honneamise, that was a beautiful piece. The ideas inspired me so much, even to this day, plus the music added to the movie's appeal.
Loved the Evangelion series, loved Ninja Scroll. Mononoke Hime was absolutely brilliant! |

Wings of Honneamise is the only anime movie that I found enjoyable in the sense that it was really a MOVIE. And Metropolis... oh my it is retarted... I know most of you are gonna go "WAH?", but the movie is so disfunctional you have to sit back and go, "No...". I mean, why make a robot killing force, when you can just stop making the damn robots in the first place?... nonsense. Anyways, Akira is nice, Bebop is probably the best series out there. Blue Sub is the ONLY animation where I liked the blend of 3d and 2d. Lodoss War is classic, Macross Plus is cool. Evangelion you love at first but as you get over it you learn that it isn't really that great at all, but it's still good. And my classic fav has to be The Secret of Nimh. The style of that movie is just too cool.
Others that are good are, Iria, Iron Giant, The Castle Cagliostro , Samurai X, and I'm sure there are others but if you don't remember them... neh. |
