No real intention or direction with this one. I just wanted to play with cinematic lighting, in this particular element.... The whole idea basically originated from me just pushing paint around.. I've been doing some (tightly directed work lately) and with this one I decided to just play with it and have some fun.... I will use it in my portfolio so I can get some friggin work... ( I tell ya it's tough finding cool projects over here in Jersey) I guess I'll have to keep pushing on..... or Burger King is always looking for help!!!!!!!!!

so bash away at me, I need it to help me stay inspired....

later

Beowulfthefallen - man there's more of us... muwahahahah!! thanks out there in cow land

capnvtec - and thank you to... but don't look at it as how you do something... no matter what you use, theres always "you" the artist who comes through, even if you made the image with old fruit, it's still you who made the image, not the fruit (do you get my babbling) don't be intimidated by the mouse, it's just a tool... I hav worked with both mouse and tablet, there are benefits and disadvantages to both, but you just end up finding yourself a nice work around with either, and I just have found it efficient to work with the mouse.. grant it it's been years since I used a tablet, and if I did again I probably would put away the mouse, but for now, for me it's working..

blok - thansk even though you're not from Jersey (just kidding) youre lucky LOL, but yes I prefaced this thread with the fact that I had no intentions, which essentially I didn't but I did want to achieve a sci-fi feel..

-HoodZ- it seems that we both posted exactly at the same time yah I've been hearing alot of crits about the tube.. it's funny cause that was the last thing I put in, and I guess my lack of concern toward them shows through, I will fix it... (you have a site??, actually let me get off my lazy ass and check your profile!!!)

I use geocities, bu my site has been recently getting alot of hits, so I just purchased a site from the host www.your-site.com (has anyone heard of them??????) their 5 bucks a month, so for me now that I'm tight with cash they were a good choice..

but www.passion4art.com is free and allows off site linking

theres eccentrix.com

but again I learned from free sites you get what you pay for

and your digital art org links doesnt work.. the site must be down

I host with them. They had some fairly substantial problems with their e-mail in recent history, which was even slowing sites down. They corrected the problem slowly, but their fix was well planned, tested, and implemented, and things have been excellent ever since. Be sure to check out their support forum ( http://members.your-site.com/vbulletin/ ) if you ever have problems or questions. They are very responsive.

I've rambled enough. Pretty painting.

GC,
I like it! Looks very "concept artish" to me.

My first crit is your materials. Everything seems to be a corroded metal, whereas I think maybe you could make the ship more specular, more reflective. I'm familiar with this, because I have exactly the same problem.

The other thing is the shapes. The tube coming off the sub looks flat. Likewise with the tubes on the left. What I've been trying to do myself is to force different sized lights with just one large key light. This will also help with scale, I think.

It's very nice, though. I can't believe you don't have more comments .

SpikesCafe - thanks... and yeah I heard about your -site from a friend, so I'm giving it a try.. my first official site www.taminglight.com nothing different than my current geocities site, but reliable an that's really what I'm looking for

AliasMoze - wow great to see you again!!!! I thought I've been out of it for awhile.. how have you been? I agree with your points on the tube flatness, actually when I did this, it was so rushed I didn't even concern myself with the elements.. the tubes were a last added thought.. I will fix them I've been hearing a lot of comments about them... can you elaborate on your other comments, (if you don't mind) I sort of understand your crits, but I think I may be looking at it differently than you are, but I'm really interested in hearing your thoughts.. I'm just not getting what you have said concerning
the ship more specular, more reflective.
Likewise with the tubes on the left. What I've been trying to do myself is to force different sized lights with just one large key light. This will also help with scale, I think. these are the crits I'm not clear on..

-HoodZ- - no prob

mof - thanks, I was hoping people would see it as being underwater

Hey, GC. I'm doing well, living in CA now. And you?

the ship more specular, more reflective.

I'm just saying it's really helpful to thing in terms of extremes in materials. Like, say, wood and glass. In this case, I'd guess that, since the sub is moving, it's probably less "matte" than the other stuff, so you could make it slicker looking. God knows this stuff is easier said than done.

Likewise with the tubes on the left. What I've been trying to do myself is to force different sized lights with just one large key light. This will also help with scale, I think.

Well, if you look at the image I linked to, I had roughly the same problem. I mean, how do you shade a scene with lots of dim, even lights? In your scene, you've got top lights, which I think should act as a strong key light. What's happening in this one is that the lighting choice is weaker, and so the image gets muddy.

Again, a shinier ship would give some nice variety.

What I mean by "scale" is that everything in the image seems the same size. This, I think, is a trouble with digital brushes -- you grab a brush and start stroking with the same size. An example of the same sized geometry would be the little tube coming off the sub, the bent metal tubes on the bottom left, and the green rack lights.

If you'd used different sized light sources (besides the top one), I think you'd have had some really nice "lost and found edges" situations in the background and on the sides. And push the background back. Make things smaller and closer together, including lights.

I've actually learned allot about this by looking at Spooge's stuff. Sorry if I'm not articulating well what I mean.

AliasMoze - California, man congrats... found something out there that got you out of Florida? Good for you man, I'm happy for ya!!!! And I'm friggin jealous also I was recently let go from the place I worked at due to budgetary reasons, so it sucks, but it has given me the incentive to finally do what I have always wanted.. now it's a matter of finding someone who will pay me to do that, that being conceptual/visual development...

I have been lucky so far, in that I have done work for Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Acclaim, LAM... doing the type of stuff Ihave always dreamed of doing.. I have doen matte paintings and conceptual illustration for X-box titles and an online game (which I'm still on) so things have been going ok, now I have to make sure I keep it that way.. But more than likely, I'm going to head to Cali myself, to se what I can do with myself out there.... only time will tell.

I finally have a real site up to showcase this new freelance path I'm trying to tread..
www.taminglight.com

and Ithink I understand your crits much better now:

the ship since it isnt a sediment object liek the rest of the ship appears to be, it is an actual working/active machine.. your suggestion is to maybe portray it with a slightly different material, a for better words cleaner metal, since it's not dormant and fungus attracting like the otehr metals...

perhaps throw varying lights into the pic... sort of like motivated lighting to spruce up the dull appearance to the image as well as add a stronger sense of scale..

and last but not least maybe use varying brush sizes so the object dont all appear as if they were maunfactured by a playdoh cookie cutter of sorts... play with the pipe sizes, scale and lighting... for visual interest variations...

is that what you meant??

if not.... that's what I get from your crit, and let me say that even if we're not on the same page, I believe the thrust of a good crit is to make the crit'tee see their creation from a different perspective... and I have to thank you cause now I certainly do...

But glad to hear you posting again, and I checked out your image collecton on your site, as usual great stuff... so give me a shout back.. here or through e-mail, I'd love to hear what's been happening with you and your bro....

plastikman- yah I do all my work that way... I used to use a wacom about 5 years ago, but I havent since ....

Sorry for being OT. Please bear with us.

GC,
Yes, as you know, my brother and I have been interested in live action writing and directing. So we finally pickeup and moved to L.A. We're writing on a TV show now, among our other projects. May be a feature film in the near future (?).

CA is awesome. There's such a melting pot of talent and opportunity here. L.A. is the American of America, I think. Sure, there are disadvantates, but we've been loving it here.

Boy, your site is nifty. Great design and content. It's good to hear you're getting a chance to work on your dream projects. Good going.

Yes, that's basically what I meant by my crits. Like I said, the things I mentioned are easier said than done.

Anyway, keep in touch, and let us know if you move out to CA.
