hi, i've been away for a while, inactive (with exception from paintchat/opencanvas and traditional media) and a bit lazy too.
I'd really like some critique on this because metal and water are things that i'm really bad at doing. I've included a little step by step to show how i built it up...any advice on the process is very much appreciated also.
I block in the colors and try to think about the values also. maybe it should be the other way around...thinking of values, then color. In any case, i used a photograph (took it during the holidays) as reference.
Without getting too detailed on any one area, i start working around the image roughly.
Hours pass...adding details and trying to get things to look right (trying!). During this i've flipped the image horizontally a few times to make it seem "fresh". I really don't know what else to say about it. at this point.
Final (beta version 0.9) version of the image...included some droids (i wonder why the starwars droids hold their guns in their hands by the way...if they'd just have them mounted to their heads they'd probably miss less shots and shoot faster too..uhm, i'm getting off the point. Anyways...i thought that being very reflective could be good camouflage since they'd take on the colors of their surroundings in that way...but a shiny highlight may be a dead giveaway when you're hiding so it might not be too good anyway.
Comments/critiques and paintovers more than welcome ![](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |

wow!, i really enjoy seeing the progression from start to almost finished. Very impressive. I have to agree with you ideas on the sniper bots though, while the highly reflective surface would provide good camo in a setting such as the one you have decided to put them in (reflections would make it hard to see, plus the strong highlights could be mistaken for sunlight coming throught he foliage) it could also be just as easy to spot it. Perhaps some sort of therm optic camo that bends light around the sniper bots ala "predator" or "ghost in the shell" Anyways nice work, hope to see a finished piece |

What if... the robot could reflect its surrounding without giving off shiny highlights? But I'm just talking out of my ass.
The rocks definitely need to be sharper, clearer, less fuzzy. That's the first thing that stood out to me.
Good point about the Star Wars droids. And why did they make them so spindly and easy to knock down? They're like paper dolls.

OR if it could refract light around it - rendering it practically invisible. Same principal as with the predator :-)
i love ure pic, i wish more people wood show their arts progression cos this helps a lot of people develop own skills. |
