Here is the first in a series of boat sketches I'm going to be doing for my "How to Draw Vehicles" book this summer. This one is done in all traditional media, verithin prisma pencil, nupastel chalk, marker and gouache. I cleaned up the scan a bit, but not much. Original size of the boat sketch is 11" front to back. I consider this first one back into traditional media a warm up. I hope to have some much better stuff to add to this thread next week after I get a few more under my belt. Until then, hope it entertains you.

Here is the next one. This one got away from me a bit. I did not have a clear plan for the material indication and background before I started so I had to resort to a little dodge and burn to try and make it work. Still shaking the rust off.

Thanks Neff.
Yeah I could spend hours on the water. I'm trying to keep the focus on the object and the speed up too. The water is meant to be simplified and just indication, but I'll experiment with how to keep the speed up and improve the quality on the next ones, thanks.

They are both very well done, top one especially. I see the top one has a shadow and reflection silhoette.

Hey Scott,

Nice control/use of light and shadow and as well as sharp highlights versus softer highlights.

Guy , thanks.

Gimbal8, Thanks, yeah the top one could have atronger reflection and a lighter shadow if I had wanted to spend more time fine tuning it.

Ed Lee, Thanks, getting back into traditional media is interesting, you realize how much easier shading digitally is.

EmKah, Thanks, that was the intent. I wanted them to be just easily gliding through the water.

To say that those are fantastic would be an understatement!! I really don't know what to say about the designs as obviously they are a little subjective. I like the top one best but I think that has more to do with the background being light and simple. When you look at the second one, it is all dark throughout whereas in the first one, more attention is give to the vehicle itself.

One little thing does bother me about the second one design wise. It seems to "twist" in a weird way. At the front of the boat, it comes to a point and the 'hull' would appear to be sloping downwards into the water. Now as the side of the boats heads to the back, the hull seems to twist around as you get to the lighter grey area. Thus the hull now looks like it is sloping in the opposite direction to the front of the boat. This kinda wouldn't be possible unless the back part of the boat develops 2 'fins'. Hopefully this makes some sense.

You'll have to let us know when you do finish this book as I will definately be getting a copy of it!!

Hi Scott, these boats are fantastic. Will there be some step-by-step-tutorials (esp in traditional media) in your book?

Matt,
Thanks, yeah you are seeing the hull right, but it comes to noes "boat tail" with a sharp centerline crease versus two tails. It is basically the opposite, rather the same of the front but upside down and at the stern. Make any sense? If you sign up on the mailing list on our website you will be the first to get a preferred preorder price on the books when I get the new website finished.

francmidi,
Yes, that is why I'm trying to get back into practice doing these boat sketches so I can do some decent traditional media step by step stuff for the book. Glad you like them.

Here is this afternoon's attempt. This one is on Borden Riley marker paper as you can see by the added grain. Not very happy with this one, but thought I would share none the less.

I guess it is a moot point but yeah I can see what you mean but the front, only upside down. I'm just trying to imagine what it would be like under the water line at the back. To my way of thinking it would probably have a large base and the drag forces created due to the shape and the type of boat, would be quite large. Thus if it is meant to be a speed boat, I couldn't see it going very fast. Minor point.

Love the 3rd image that you have here and one step ahead of ya with regards to the news letter!

BTW - your site is great!

You get amazingly smooth shading transitions for markers. I can't remember ever seeing marker drawings with that sort of gradient work. Very nice.

The Magic Pen, shin,
Thanks.

Matt Elder,
Thanks, If you can find some pictures of the old Hacker and Chris Craft speedboats you will understand this type of hull form a little better. Just imagine taking a regular fairly flat bottom boat and extending the stern enough to allow you to make the top view round. I'll see if I can dig up some scrap.

Sumaleth,
LOL, markers! Now that would be impressive. It is marker paper, but I used chalk, pencil and gouache, no markers. Sorry to disappoint.

Later,

-S.
