This is one of a series of paintings I did depicting the history of the swedish steel industry. This particular piece shows one of the swedish iron/steel projects in northen India at the end of the 19th century.

Beautiful work, nice colors! It seems a little inconsistent in the details, which makes it look more like a painting, but that's allright :]

Good to see you posting again Pierre.

To me, the green mountain on the left looks too saturated to be that far in the background. It almost has the same value as some of the elements in the foreground. The difference in value between it and the mountains behind it seems too drastic to me.

But... I don't feel qualified to be suggesting anything to you. Great work.. really great work.

this is a beautiful painting- looks like a lot of work went into this.

i don't know if you want to hear criticism on it or if its already finished
but if you do:

the colors on the rocks look are a bit too organized and regular it seems, almost like there are 4 big spots of color there
red (rocks) green (wall) then lightred (ground) and lightgreen (above the wall)

the roofs of the houses on top of the plateau
seem a bit too "perfect" a bit variation in color or value would break that up a bit

the cast shadows on the bright stones in the foreground would maybe get more blue diffuse light from the sky

okay, i hope that didnt offend you in any way, its not meant that way- quite the opposite

pierre: Great to have you posting here again. This is really awesome!

I dunno, seems that the colours are very 'seperated'. You know, if you kinda squint everything seems to be a block of one particular hue, as though nothing reflects colour of anything else. Bah, I can't phrase it quite right.

Like I said, really nice.

[ EDIT - skipped over too much of fuel_99's post. That's what I was meaning by the seperated colours in the pic. ]

I'm so glad you are posting again. You're one of the people I felt was wronged by the sijun community in the past, and I've always hoped that you'd let it bounce off and start posting again.

This is a very nice piece. The only thing that made my eyes wander uncomfortably a bit was the inconsistencies in the sharpness of detail. In some areas, it's razor sharp, while in others it's a bit too soft in contrast.

Also, the sky in the top left corner's got some overly saturated spots. The lighting on the nearby mountains seems a bit inconsistent with the lighting on the buildings too.

Keep posting! I'm looking forward to more.

The piece looks pretty good. Though I noticed a couple of things. If you dont want the crit please dont read any further. Because really who am Iright?

Ok first off, like the others said, the detail is great but its inconsistent. It looks like youve used several different references and patched them together. Take the clouds for instance the hue from the left side of the painting is quite different from the right. The same thing can be said for some of the foreground rock and dirt areas. I realize that iron and copper discolor local rock and dirt but it looks patchy. Good job on the structural aspect of the buildings they look 3D but are a little flat and lack some crustiness. Great job on the atmospheric effect of the mountains it gives a lot of depth to the piece.

Im not trying to bag on your work, you obviously have a lot of talent, and these are just some details I would add to a detailed piece.

INCREDIBLE. Reminds me a lot of Craig Mullin's "500 Nations" series. Epic landscapes with every grass blade shaded correctly ;-) Only the green mountain on the left and above it, the color-dodged cyanic blue clouds look a little too flashy imho. But hey, its an awesome picture. How long did u work on that one ?

Thanks for the comments. I never tend to see things as clear as my crits do. I agree with all of you. Some portions are indeed examples of really bad painting.

The top portion of the painting is yet to be finished actually since I haven't received all of the plans of the buildings yet, just preliminary ones. I just blocked them in in wait for the final, don't really know whether they will be there or not.

Other paintings awaits that kind of information too.

rez is 6000 pixels across (200 ppi)

Don't know exactly how long it took since I worked on several at once but I would guess this one took a little more than one week, some two days for establishing the comp and all its aspects and a week for rendering. I had to squeeze most of them in between school work.

Thanks again for the helpful and insightful comments.

Pierre
