This is why i try not to post replys ( to be quite honest ive seen it all before ) - too many influences here dalkstalkers etc - ie: be original. If you want a crit the hand is not very good and thats probably why you hid the other one ( or its just your creative licence ) the armour around his neck has wrong angles and his chin could never stick over it unless he has a giraffe neck that points forward, the foreshortining is wrong too ( he has skew feet id like to see him stand in a breeze ) the design on his clothing is scrapy as the color of it and the feet - enough crit for you / be carefull what you wish for ( and im not saying these things to be nasty these are real crits of the image ) but its still nice ( note i never said great or wow ) i did look at your site too these remaks arent unjustified. ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Toast, Ratbat's probably trying to practice the style that is Hyung-Tae Kim's. Give him a couple of years to merge it into his own.
Ratbat, you should try to merge & blend several styles together if you are to make a mark for yourself. (But I must say that this is a very nice) I shouted "Hyung-Tae Kim" when I saw it, you must try to hide it more.
Someone has made a great point over at Conceptart.org in this topic . Though it is about Spaceship design, it could be apply here as well.
Let's not start anything here. calling names won't get us anywhere.

Since im just a student at a mere 21 years of age everything up untill this point has been dictated by classes and by observable details. for a long time i had worked without using color, (almost 15 years) and upon discovering hyungs art like so manny others the concept of coloring my works in an enjoyable mannor became much more acessable. since i enjoy the eastern manga style much more then the western comic style, My attempt is not to steal his charecter concepts, like toast belives i am. but this was mainly a journey in the understanding of the way his colors work. I have a regular style of my own, But people had previously belived it was to 'juvinile' and i wanted to do soemthing that was less kiddy and more dynamic in pose and colors. overall i belive this test was a sucess considering i cant draw people very well. as for making a name for myself, im stil in the process of studding various artists like satoshi urushihara, and katoki hajime to find my common ground. but i suppose untill then ill allways be held in disregard by the "manga-haters" on various boards. |

Right click.. save as. Yep.. that completely kicks ass.
And as far as crits go.. the only crit i have is when people who do worse work try to tell you that your stuff is not looking right. Oh i dont know.. maybe those people with only one star by their name or something.. just as an example.
At any rate That is a great piece. Nice shadows and great design. The only crit about your work i would have would be that it would be interesting o have a little more light on the pants to excentuate folds and creases. I know the pants are black, but i think just a little but of reflected light.. or something just to add more structure under it. just an oppinion.
But again.. Looks schnazzy I like it. |

I like to brag about Ratbat's work, even though I'm in no way connected to it (other than as a major fan). She appreciates the style and is far more advanced than any peer -- particularly in the principles and perspectives of manga. As is with all great artists, she lets minor comments hurt her more deeply than those comments have right to do. Intentions don't fit into it.
I think this is a fantastic piece, just like everything you do, Ratty. You hold yourself to very high standards and constantly challenge yourself. If there's any flaw in your work, it's visible only to you. ^_^
Keep up the awesome work. You've got more fans than you'll let yourself see. |

toast - please don't refrain from constructive criticism. perhaps you just want to avoid the flak, but i think criticism is often much more valuable than praise. you had valid points, and obviously you're not being mean. but as lee pointed out, most artists (especially those influenced by games and comics) start out by imitation and influence, and unique personality takes sometimes takes time to show. your points about unoriginality could easily be levelled at 80% of the comics, anime and manga artists. at least credit ratbat for choosing hyung over sailormoon and dragonball
