I don't usually have anything to post....but these were a couple of illustrations i've done this semester for my illustration minor at uni.
the owl is done in coloured pencil on coloured pastel paper and the house in ink pen.

Well this is pretty nice. The owl is really well done. Did you work from ref pics for both your pieces ?
The perspective in the house drawing seems to be slightly off. Your etched rendering seems to be too different from one place to another. For example the columns in the foreground. The roof is really neat ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

actually i have a confession to make with the house one...
it was just for an illustration assignment...an illustration of a historical home for a newspaper article...
and being very short on time i didn't really have time to sit there and sketch it from photo ref..so i scanned in the photo, enlarged it..and very lightly traced it to get proportions etc...but all detail was filled in by eye.
and that's why the perspective seems to be out, when you take a photo, tall things like buildings etc converge inwards as they get higher.
the composition is all silly, and using the thicker marker for the bushes etc prob wasn't a good idea. I'll probably re-do that piece for my final folio, even though i got quite a good mark for it already.
and the owl came from a photo reference...but it was bloody tiny! I really just had to make a lot of it up as i went. And i wasn't happy with the way the white pencil looked on the paper.
But hey, its all about learning, right?
thanks for the nice comments ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Nice stuff. I don't know if your professors mention this, but stong negative space could make these more interesting. |

hey jeise....
better quality pencils most DEFINATELY make a difference, and unfortunately they are more expensive.
After all, you can't really do exceptional work with cruddy tools.
I have a whole collection of pencils that i've gotten over the years....most of them i've had since i was a kid (i kinda pinched 'em off my mum since she doesn't use them much anymore). But if i ever walk into an art shop i don't walk out with atleast $30AUS worth of pencils I guess i have about $300 worth of them? Maybe more, its hard to tell. But the more the better, lots n lots n lots of colours.
I'm a bit of a pencil finatic (most of my work online is done with them, check out my homepage if you want to see more)...
I work heavily with my layers, so i much prefer a softer pencil. I use derwents (which i find quite hard and don't layer very well, but would be nice for the soft gradient type of thing), faber castel (they are quite hard too), faber castel aquarells (aquarells are really soft, i use them without water) and my most FAVOURITE and LOVED pencils are my Berol Eaglecolours - they are very smooth and creamy and layer really really well. They are an american brand so i can't find them *anywhere* here in Australia, though becuase you are from Canada you might have more luck than me!
well, good luck...and long live the coloured pencil! |

I like your owl, I think your use of pencil crayons is exceptional. I've been experimenting with them lately, and I hear that more expensive pencil crayons do actually make a difference.
Question: how much (if you know) were the ones you used to do the owl?
Btw, I think your whites are fine, it sort of makes it look like the darkness of dusk. |
