very nice image. i've played around with this method as well. i think it's a really great compromise between digital and traditional art.

Some of the textures are drawn with the pencil, then I took a picture of some bark and multiplied it slightly over the trees.
It has depth and at the same time looks flat because every tree and the owl is on seperate layers, casting subtle shadows on the layers below.
