Here comes some sketches.

With this I got inspired by those little prehistoric fertility goddess statues and started sketching.

This is a concept of a bad guy for a forever lasting freetime project. Here he is dressed up and ready for the representative tasks...

and here in the next morning.

C&C welcome and appreciated, as always.

Ville

Nice B&W pics. The painting is very cool, I really like the brush work.

Free time projects...If only my free time was as never-ending as my projects.

Hee, cool That's an interesting take on the fertility statues. She's so disproportionate, but still looks great (though I can't help thinking her head and arms should be a little bigger and heftier to match her body). I love that linework, especially on her legs. It's very dynamic and engaging.

I like the second picture, but the line work doesn't have quite the same vibrant interest as the first. Also, his shoulders seem very stiff, as though he's got them hunched up. Personally, I would lower them a little, slope them downwards and make them more relaxed; I've found that it can add a little too the imposing visage of a villanous character. Great design on the cloak, and good job on his face and hair.

That painting is really great, and again, I really love the brushwork. Good job on the facial structure, and on your use of colors (the reddish reflected light is a nice touch). There seems to be too many soft edges, though, too many places where it the color feathers out without a definite edge. For the most part, the soft edges are great, especially along the outer outline of the hair and the lower areas of the painting. But personally, I'd sharpen up a few areas like the upper rim of the collar, and some of the edges between the hair and forehead. Not a lot, just a little bit to give it a tad more definition in some places.

Overall, great job! Keep up the good work.

-Julie

hey

great to see you picture posting again =)

1: This is my favourite of the three paintings. It looks pretty realistic but at the same time kinda stylised. The exaggerated features look still feasible. I mean if there was a woman with that build, she would certainly look like that =) Did that make any sense?

2: In my humble opinion this is the worst of the 3 pictures shown. I can't really point my finger on it, but it looks too simple for your skill-level. The arms and the collar are great, but the rest of the cloak is pretty simple and plain. He doesn't look really mean. And one thing I noticed on ypur heads is that you seem to constantly make the eyes too narrow to each other. I think you could make this picture a thousand times better with maybe dramatic lightning or with something else to catch the viewers attention.

3: Is great again! The narrow (and too small?) eyes are the only mistake I can spot. But the colours are awesome! And I really mean awesome.

All in all these are great pictures. As a more general progress critique I would ask you to make more than character sketches. Maybe include your characters into a background? Give the viewer something to play with. Some story elements even? I think you headed in the right direction with the "earlyman" pic. But please make more coloured pieces. They absolutely rock! =)

I don't know a lot about painting. So take everything with a grain of salt. This is all just imho =)

Frog - Thanks. =)

Gimbal8 - Thank you. Yeah, that free time thing is on top of my wish list too.

jdillon - Thanks a lot for the thorough analysis and critique, Julie. Yes, (in the first pic) the linework got stiffer in the upper body as I started scribbling back and forth with the details. I tried some changes on the second image according to your suggestions, I'll see if I can post it later today. Also good points about the portrait. I think I'll touch it too a bit today.

S4Sb - Hey, thanks man.
Hehe, I guess that kinda made sense.
The second sketch was meant to be more of a costume study than an illustration, so I don't think I'm going add much surroundings to it, maybe in the next take of the character. But you're right, it could be better. Good input about the cloak. I fixed the eyes too. Point taken about the eyes in the portrait too. And you're right again, I should do more scenes and environments. Actually I was/am going to make a painting out of the "early man", just got carried away with the sketching.

Big Pa - Thanks! Take a deep breath now.
