newspaper illustrations, again. Gonna fix the girl some more.. klaivu pointed out some mistakes. C&C appreciated, i need to go do a third one.

(according to some old Finnish medical advice, pressing bee sting with scythe eliminates the poison :Q.

I have to say that i always appreciate your work a lot.
It looks like the edge of the scythe is on the outer side and the girl's face doesn't blend well with the rest of it all.

Maybe in the second one you could show the bee flying away into the background or maybe not...since mosts bee's lose their stinger and a largre part of their innards it's unlikely that they survive...kinda like kamikaze bombers.

thanks klaivu. now wait till you're sober and take another look at your repaint.

ah yes, i translated it wrong. wasp is more like it. the finnish species can sting multiple times. i think the confusion was in the name.

let's see how it turns out. thanks nova. lol, there's no edge on the inner side of the blade.

Ah well, I'll take another look in the morning.

I like it a lot. I like bees.

The girl does have a slightly "squashed" look, but as an illustration fares very well. I'd say leave it -- unless you're trying to create a more interactive image, where she's looking at the bee or something.

Nice stuff. Excellent color palate.

Well, I like the way the girl's soft face stands out against the texture. And the construction of the face looks just fine to me. But what do I know..!

Since they're for a newspaper, are they going to be printed in this sepia tone, or plain black&white dither? (just curious)

Nova, you're correct in your assumption. They do work like that.

The wasp's cool, a neat stylized design and whatnot. Liking the grainy texture and the way her clothes are portrayed. Hmm, imho her face would look better if it conformed to the rendering of the rest of the pic, now it's a bit ambiguous in its smoothness.

I like it, good work!

i just wanna say that the IS an edge on the inside and not the outside. Dont tell me that farmers in Finland use the scythe different.

and i really like the way the wasp looks ...and i like teh water colour look.

Novacaptain! I meant there's no edge on the inner side of the blade in my painting, although there should be! I didn't meant to mock your crits, I meant you were right.
eh, now there's a picture to show how scythe should be used and people wondering how it is used in Finland. :) veritas and molako, you are both right!

about the face, I think I'm gonna add some rough parts there to sink it down a little. dr.bang, thanks for going through the trouble.. I'll see how bad it turns when I touch it again. The scythe will have the edge on the correct side :), that farmer picture is hilarious.

saffron: they will come out colored like this, no bw.

This is too funny...sorry about that. I misunderstood your reply totally. oh well.

Are you going to do more of these pictures about finnish superstitions? They're really interesting and well done too.

Shouldn't the scythe be longer and a bit more straight?

I know nothing about painting faces but I would love to fit the face it into the rough illustration style of the other image-parts.

If the right side of her face is that dark, there should be shadows of her hair on the left side of her face, esp on here cheek(?) and forehead.

I realy love the hard brush-strokes. Great images!

Maybe I did miss it, but what kind of newspaper / article was it ment for?
