Hello folks! It's been a kinda long time when I've posted last time here. Ok then, This is my pic to Roundeye's contest. I've painted this about zillion of hours. Some painkillers would be nice now...
Crits and comments would be also nice.
I would especially want to know is there enough contrast?!?
It's always my biggest problem. I'm so afraid to use darkest values and I'm not too sure if my monitors are calibrated propebly.
BTW. here is the link for the bigger version.
Beatybeast hi-res

Nitpicking : The girls pose is a bit stiff, and her facial features look a bit odd. Also, I would love to see some more texturing on the orange parts of the robot. Currently, it seems a bit too bland.
Compliments : Amazing robot design, and great attention to details. The background is wonderful, along with the shading job. Great work =D |

somehow her butt seems too big... especially when compared to her wrists/ankles. But the concept is very nice, and the monster looks cool. |

As far as your contrast question I would say "no". Too much light and focus on areas that don't need it. I say this because I understand your dilema 'cause this is an issue I struggle with as well. The image is much to bright IMO for what I think you're trying to accomplish. Create another layer and darken the sh*t out of it and then start removing it in subtle steps while focusing on the highlights. Work from the foreground back and the background forward if that makes sense. We don't need to see all of the detail within the beast, floor etc., and the lights on his shoulders drew my eye to them before I saw the nice face that you had created. And yes, the gals figure is a bit stiff. Throw some more curves into her to contrast the ridgedness of him...
My 2 cents hopefully it made sense. Nice work and just my opinion. Sorry for the quick reply, but it's time to flee here for the Holiday weekend and you make it a great one, too...
Cheers! |

You've got a great picture here. I like the retro sci-fi feel to it. I think the robot is perfect. The city in the back looks cool, too. The girl's pose is a bit stiff, as if she's a robot herself. The values look right to me, but one thing that might help would be to bring down some of the contrast in the background, where the city is. I think the highlights you have there draw too much attention from the main figures.
Those are just some of my thoughts. Great job, either way. |

Looks great concept rocks!
I'd like to add to the above crits that the color of the moon disturbs me.. Everything in the background looks as f its seen through green glass.. (which it is right?)... Except for the moon... Great job though ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Wow! People really bothered to reply in my thread! I did also an update (just quick darkening with big brush) based to the crits of contrast. I'll make some changes to to gal when I know the contrast and other major issues works good. You can do an overpaint if you see it neccessary. And propably you will. And yes, I know the contest is over now, but I still want to polish this pic "perfect".
Sedone: Yep. very good point! You're absolutely right about city highlights. So I darkened them down. My common problem is that I want to show as much things as possible in a single pic too obviously. Now I also see the problem in the girls pose.
Thank you for the good crits!
Mr. Crowley: Thank you!
amphex: Yes, you're right about girls pose and pretty much about the face. I wasn't aiming for perfect realism, tho. But I can see what you mean. I'm not too sure if I agree with texturing the orange parts. There would be just too much noise.
oops! I've already forgotten how beauty should be spelled! My english skills aren't too good anyway. (pretty bad actually)
Asurfael: I just happen to like gals with big butt hehe! No, maybe you're right. I'm sometimes too lazy to use references.
Thanks for pointing that out.
Waldo: I'm not 100% sure what you mean, but I think I've a strong clue. So I tried it out. Is the update pic anything like you ment?
collin: Yep. The girl needs more color variations. Now it looks kinda plastic.
NiM: Thank you for the compliments! I just ment the atmosphere to be green. Not the glass. But wouldn't it make the background pretty boring if there isn't any color variations.

Wow Tepox, this is really great! Some wonderful detail, especially in the robot and I love the little touches like the faces at the top. Your work is improving in leaps and bounds my friend--great stuff! |
