after looking at Craig Mullins website I was inspired to do some digital paintings. I did this one with the intention of it being for the speed painting II thread, but I eventually spent about two hours on it and decided that was much too long for a quickstudy. comments and critiques are welcome

thx

Chickensoup,
I really like your figure. Coloring is kinda funky. Your tones are all over the map, and the colors seem like a motley grouping of palette cliches.

One thing that helps me (grain of salt: I'm no Craig Mullins) is to break the geometry down into simple shapes. A box for the torso, cylinders/cones for the arms and legs. And then I refine the smaller shapes.

On second thought, forget what I said, and search for threads by Fred Flickstones. He's a fantastic artist and teacher, and -back in the olden days- he published many tutorials here.

Hope that helps. Welcome to Sijun.

Excellent composition and good anatomy. I'd say you should try and refine it further, if you're able.
And yes, welcome to Sijun

WOW!

I love this one. Pose, the water...
You could maybe extend the picture to show hints of the water baskets his carrying...

This is very cool indeed.

Just to expand on what AliasMoze said, you can find Fred's tutorials on www.gfxartist.com which has taken over 3dpalette (who used to host the tutorials).

I loved it, especially the choice of colours and the fact you left them there not compromising
a few comments though:
is that red spot on the man's left suppose to be a nipple? if so, then it's misplaced, I don't think we're suppose to see it at all.

I also think his chest is a bit too big

I think it should be a bit darker in his back, under the stick (or-what-ever-it-is) he's holding, 'cos the light is from the top.

both hands looks a bit.. not finished. he doesn't look like he's actually putting his arm's weight on the stick, the way he's suppose to do. maybe it should be a bit darker around there too.

but even with all of my crits, I think the painting is great

Hey thanks everyone for the comments and critiques! I am definately look forward to submitting more stuff in the future.

Aliazmoze: I'm not sure if understand what you're trying to get at about the colors. I also found the tutorial you were talking about and what he is saying is true for an interior object lit from the front at 3/4's (rembrandt lighting) angle. For this painting, I'm going for a light skinned backlit figure, a very strong reflected light, and slightly exaggerated color. When you're talking about tones, are you talking about my values? Are you talking about contrast? Do you think I should push the seperation between lightside and the darkside even more than it is now? Does my treatment of the values make the figure look too flat to you? Thanks!

Genesis: I have this problem where I have a difficult time finishing paintings. Once I start on the refinement process, I don't know when to stop. It's something I need to learn to do. Thanks!

Eorand: Thanks! Yeah, I agree, the water baskets would definately be a nice storytelling element.

ninja: yff

nevanlinna: thank you

ceenda: very cool, thanks for the link!

Lolion: Awesome

eyewoo: your paintings make me want to go hide under a rock now. DUDE they're sooo tight! nice!

lady z: no, it's not a nipple, it's part of the underdrawing I left in there. I'll take it out. Yep, I agree, there should definately be a soft shadow underneath the stick. When you're talking about the hands, are you talking about the pose of the hands/arms or are you just referring to the shadow of the stick not being evident enough? Thanks for the c&c

Thanks again everyone! You're crits have been helpful.

about the hands - I did mean it should be more shadowed under the stick. And about his right hand - you really should refine it a bit, altough the painting suppose to have a rough look to it (I think) it's still a bit too much with the hand, needs more details.

I really like the colours on his back and the water. Looks great!

One thing I think could be done is perhaps make his pants look a little bit wet a couple of inches above the water line n' stuff for like, waves splashing up etc. And expanding it to add baskets would be cool too.

Chicken,
Well, I come back and hear words like "great" and "perfect". I won't argue with the audience reaction here

But, yes, I was talking about value. And I personally find the colors in the flesh distracting, because the same theme is not carried over into the pants and water.

Again, if you and everyone else digs the image, then I'll give it a rest.
