Wow, that's truly excellent! napalm mentioned the lack of highlights, but I think it's just great this way - now the values are just perfect for bringing out the graphical composition, which is excellent IMO.
The fish is indeed a nice touch - without it, the whole thing would be more menacing, now it's somehow bizarrely cosy The fishbowl nicely rounds out the color palette in a very subtle way too.
I just love this pic

hell yeah my mom loves robots!
that's great! so much personality, and i really dig the color palete. The pet fish is a nice touch, and he looks really creepily happy to get that birthday cupcake.
i like cupcakes.
No real crits except that he could maybe use some specularity somewhere, even rusty metal has some shiny worn/scratched parts.
great work, more more more! how about a whole photo album of how this guy spent his birthday? ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Thanks all for the comments-
napalm- That's funny, I usually use specularity but for this piece I decided not to... I guess I should think about it for the next one.
Mr.T- Sure, but I can't really offer you much in the way of miracles.
Little Bee- Actually I've got Ashley's collected Popbot stuff. Have you seen his artbook, "Uno Fanta" It's the bomb.
NiM- Yeah, I think it safe to say that there is a little bit of Marvin in him... But I guess there's a little Bender too

Savanur- Thanks! And as far as doing the textures I use the inherent paper texture of Painter and then apply many layers of colors and glazing with varying sizes of brush until I get the texture I'm after. |

i have to post this, although an artist i am not, just a huge fan of it =)
but when i look at this, i feel depression really. i see a lonely robot with no real emotion celebrating somehting it dose not understand. yet at the same time it's looking down at it's dead pet fish. which to me means that it is struggleing to understand life, and emotions. yet, it appears to be dead, so that also means it dose not understand death.
i dunno, over all i get a really strong feeling from it, it's very VERY well done. and i was wondering... may i use it for my desktop? |

WOW!
Thats awesome. Somebody always seems to step in now and then raising the standard!
Really no crits, nothing obvious anyway. Only thing I can see is a little problem with perspective, here and there... mainly the head, the circles seem to suggest slightly different vanishing points. When you compare the forehead line, with the upper jaw line.. thats where I noticed it. Very very minor though. *Ian ducks for airborne assault of rotten tomatoes*
Awesome painting! I love it! |

Me likes the dead fishy, an oily tear from the robots eye would have made the entire picture complete for me. |

Baby Jman- Thanks! Glad you liked the website too.
Kaete- It's not nice to piss off automatons... Besides he probably used machine screw sprikles to decorate.
Dameaon- That's pretty much the whole emotional range I was shooting for. That despressing, yet somewhat comical, half-life of a being on the cusp of sentience. Desktop? Sure! (Just make sure that whenever someone asks who did it you point at them and do that "invasion of the body snatchers" scream.)
Boomstick- BIG badda boom. Now put it back in your pants
Ian- Okay ya got me. You're right on about the perspective, I eyeballed the entire thing. No rotten tomatoes here, but I do have a Volvo with a bad alternator I could throw...
Arc- an oily tear... I'll think about that for the next one. Thanks!

Pretty awesome. I like the way you handle robots. I'd like to see your interpretation of the Tin Man from the "Wizard of Oz." |

Hoodz- Nope, no Feeb Brushes. Though Mike and I are good friends we work so differently that I can't use his brushes effectively. I have made my own vairation of the chalk brush to do all my painting.
Dameaon- That's the one! Now, can you look like Donald Sutherland while you do it too?
Damppuppy- The Tin Man... That'd be prett freakin cool... I'll have to think on that.
Hoodz- Or a giant candy heart that says "U R Gr8" ... Nah a human heart is better.
Kaete- Told ya
Jayceel- Thanks!
Glitterbuy- Thanks too!
