heya,

these two portraits were the result of a couple things, not least of which was a night of heavy partying at my friend's birthday party... anyways, one of the portraits was done of me by my friend jeff, who's leaving town on tuesday... the other one i reciprocated immediately after...

the portrait of me:

the portrait of jeff:

wow. That top one sucks so much, I'm not going to even BOTHER critting it. Why the heck did you post such a monstrosity? That Jeff guy doesn't know what he's doing.

I like the style you used on the bottom pic. It looks like you built it up with a lower opacity brush, starting from white, then adding darks, right? It gives it a really good 3D look.

I think they eye looks too stylized. It looks a little "pasted-on". I think you would have been better served by trying to 3D-ize it.

you may want to darken your darks. . .

The chin area's a little muddy, you may want to clean that up too.

But it looks like you got a pretty good likeness. I don't know this Jeff guy, but I bet you were a bit too flattering. I'm sure he's one ugly mofo.

I would have liked to seen some pics of you and him, just to see how on target you were (and he not).

That's not very useful criticism...

FWIW, I like the top one better, the thick linework is much more effective than the muddy painting on the other one.

yeah, in case no one's caught on, Jeff=Walkaer...

anyways, i realize my piece was a bit muddy, but i was trying for a quickie portrait... i think i'm trying too hard to be spooge-ish... you're right about the contrast, though... i've always seemed to have problems pushing the lights and darks... i think i need to have a little more confidence in myself to be able to pull it off properly... my pieces have generally always required some contrast adjustments at the end of the process...

anyways, you know your piece is good... god knows you got enough praise at filamon's place... the only thing i'd say is, while i'm no expert on line-weight, i'd say some variation in line weight may do you good... of course, i may simply be talking out my ass...

dude, i gotta run, but we'd better meet up before you leave tomorrow, man... peace...

aha. you caught me. I wasn't even thinking of line-weight.

But yeah, I guess it was just cause it was a quickie sketch. You all have to realize; both of these were 15 min (if even that long) quickies. So I suppose they should be taken for what they are: not refined masterpieces, but rather a collection of thoughts. Heh.

he he he. sorry for the mixup sfr.
