...or was it Brinstar? I can't remember which. ^^ I was going through my old SNES games the other day, and remembered just how much I loved Super Metroid. I managed to get this done pretty fast, which really surprised me, because I'm usually slow as hell. ^_^;
Comments and critiques are very welcome. I realize this is kind of sloppy (sorry!); I'll probably try to clean it up more soon.
Thanks for your time
-Julie
EDIT: Changed some colors and made the shoulderpads bigger.

Very cool.
Just one thing : I think if you gave the orange guy a different helmet, higher above his shoulders and a throat he would definetly look a lot better.
But that's only my 2 cents. |

g-1: Thanks! ^_^
SaladBowl: I agree, but I'm trying to stick to the original design at least somewhat. She has really huge shoulders and no neck, though my version *does* look off...
Here is the original design from the game. Actually, if anything, I should make the shoulders bigger and the head lower on the body... :/

.. awsome hm... the coloring is wonderful. Really soft like... the only thing that is bothering me is that samus seems off proportions for samus. Her left shoulder seemsmaybe too close to her head or something. I'm not sure if it's just the cg or the drawing itself. Or maybe I'm just wrong, but it nags on me anyways.

The old 8-bit nintendo version:
The super nintendo (metroid2) version:
Anyways, I think that the painting looks pretty good. The pose looks odd though. It seems a little strange that she's just standing there, tilted backwards, looking at the sphere. I think that if she were to reach out as if to grab the ball, it'd become more interesting.
The original armor design is nice. However since you're doing your own version of it I don't think you ought to worry too much about making it look exactly alike, unless that's really what you want. Make some ajustments and such to make it a little more of your own. I, for one, would probably have made it more streamlined and slender because i think the bulky armor from the original design doesn't fit well with the agility and flexibility of the character.
see http://www.paintpixel.com/samus.jpg for an example
I'm not suggesting that it's what you should do, that is just how i would've tried to make it. anyways...to make it more alike the original, you can use this blue print.
The colors look a little "washed out" IMHO.

Great picture. I like how you've captured the jungle in the background with just a few relatively simple tree shapes. About the only thing that is a bit strange about this picture is how she is standing. She looks a little bit taken aback by the sphere thing since she is leaning away from it slightly. |

w00t! metroid! looks awesome, although i don't remember any of super metroid looking that... serene.
novacaptain: you're mistaken there. the second picture you posted is from the gameboy version, which is metroid 2. super metroid on snes is number 3.
and the rumour is that metroid prime is a prequel. it will probably suck though.

Thank you very much for the replies, everyone. :)
Turnip > Thanks! :)
Rogelio > Thanks :) Ah, I haven't seen anything from the new game yet; I should go dig up some screen caps and see how it looks. :)
aColdOldKodiak > Yeah, I figured the proportions were off.. Even with mechas and robot suits, I have proportion issues (sad, ain't it?) I need to go take more basic classes, because this is an area I'm really hurting in...
Suburi > Hey, Suburi! Good to see you again, and sorry for not posting anywhere more often... ^.^;
NovaCaptain > Thanks for all the input and help. :) I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I really prefer the bulkier look to the slender, feminine look. That's what I like about the character; she's tough, but doesn't have to wear a special "girl" suit or anything skimpy to get the work done. Sure, you wouldn't know she's a woman based on the proportions of mech suit, but who says you have to? Or maybe I'm just weird... c_c Thanks for the input on the pose, as well.. I know the pose doesn't work, but I still kind of like her posed that way. I thought it was neat, but no one else seems to like it... :/ I'll try something different next time. :)
Hyptosis > Thanks :)
Allen W > Thank you :) Yeeeeah, I know the pose is weird... All I can say is that I *was* trying to make it look more like she was cautious, contemplative or taken aback, because some of the Chozos (the guy holding the orb) in the game attack you rather than help you, and I was always really careful anytime I came up to one after getting my butt kicked several times by one of them. Unfortuantly, it didn't translate very well visually.. ^.^; I'll try harder next time. :)
Ken > Thanks :) And you're right, the new game will probably suck, which is too bad because it could have been a really a great series... :<
Thanks again, everyone! ^_^

Very nice, Julie. ha. I'm with Suburi; you should really post more! I've always enjoyed seeing your artwork. The coloring has always been a plus. ^_~
ha. I'd have to agree that nomatter how good you get, it is always important to go back and study the basics. (I have the same problem with proportions) ^_^;
hm. I like the stance, but that arm that is behind her looks too much like it molds into her leg. Her arm also looks too thin. Just widen it a bit and maybe change the direction of the arm to fix it up.
Hope to see more from you. ^_^ |

Mad picture indeed! @:-D
I dunno. I think the lean looks fine. Looks like she's taking a bit of a breather, resting her left foot on an unseen rock, perhaps thinking "*sigh* *puff* Man, at least that trek up the mountain side was worth it!" @:-D
I still remember when my friend told me Samus was actually a female. I was like "WHA!!??" Seamus pwns Lara Croft. *grinz* |

Love this piece Jullie.
I love how you considered the glow/shine of the bluish globe onto the armor of Samus.
Only a little weird thing I see is the thigh, it may seem too wide, I know she is wearing armor but if you make those two thighs togethor they would came in contact and cause lots of friction if she moves.
Everything else looks very very well done. Great picture!!! |
