no reference practise, human head. I got some advice over at eatpoo forums which were very helpful.
Anyway, after some deformed steps, here she is, still pretty weird-looking but that's what you get when you click a thread by me :P.
I like how it turned out, after 3 damn days of work(!). it was educational.
If you think she looks weird as hell, be my guest and post a crit or two :)

looks good.. she Does have a weird "i'm better than you" expression on her face (i think it's that smirk in the corner of her mouth), and her breasts don't seem to align with her upper chest and neck. i really like the textures, colors and lighting. |

Erm...personally, I like Gecko's version better...it has a more 'real-person'-appeal.
Just my 2 cents though.

I like it! i for one feel the minor anatomical anomalies are not hurting this piece at all since the strength of it is the style and the "real person" expression.
the one thing that bugs me a little is the leaf (vegetation) coming up beneath her left breast (our right). it plays with the eye making her torso look weird at first glance |

I didnt mean to say that he should change the entire thing :/ I know mine is a bit idealized but I just wanted to show some anatomical things that i think take away from the picture in my opinion
I still think it is a wonderful picture. |

I have an "I'm better than you" smirk myself, its built in, even though I'm not thinking that! See, we're all victims hahhaa. Nicely done Gecko, do another, try to get some nice strong strokes in there-one good stroke takes the place of 5 unthoughtful ones! |

I didnt think i was better than him
I dont know how to compare
but someone can still point out anatomical problems even if they arnt as good as the other artist
happens a lot on other boards |

I think that toasted helped with the anatomy problems, but i still like the original first - she looks really weird, but it's a kind of good weird.
She seriously needs a right eye though...
or if you're not supposed to see that eye, then make it really dark. If shown in mono you'll see that the right (our left) side of her face is actually a higher tonal value (that's right isn't it, higher is lighter? or is that the other way around..eep)...
...anyway...so it makes it kind of jump out, stand forward - when really it should be sitting backwards in the picture (further away).
am i making any sense at all?
I think that once she has a second ey (and looking alot less like cyclops :P) the painting will be improved dramitically.
I say give it a go and see what happens ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Hey Gecko,
I have been a long reader of the forum(just reading but not posting). I have always enjoyed you animal sketches.
First of all, I like the picture you have. It has a pretty cool look to it. If you were aiming for realistic stuff, here are my 2 cents worth opinion.
The left side of head looks good(The parts in light). The right side however seems a little squashed horizontally. Similar to what you would do in old painting, try to get a good "edge". Really focus on how things "turn away" from you. Same thing applys to the nose, lips, and the right eye. If possible, purchase or borrow a skull and do tons of sketches of it. It will correct you on the shape of the cranial mass and the placements of the facial features.
After you have the cranial mass and the features placed properly, choose a light source. In your image, light seems to be coming from the left or the front(since the left cheek is in light). The problem is the right cheek is in complete darkness and the drop shadow of the nose is kind of lost, too. Try to apply main light and shadow shapes with a brush that is a little bigger than what you are conftable with. It will allow you to get the basic shape of the object down first(in this case the head), and act as a map when you start to go into details.
Anyway, this is just my humble opinion. Could be right or wrong. Hope it helped. Below is a quick paint over I did.
Hope this stupid geociti stuff shows up... If it doesn't, try the link below too...

actually, no, scrap what i said about the tonal value bit (it's hard to comment when you can't look at the piece and you're doing it from memory).
its still a darker value - but its just...plain! needs an eye
and maybe her boobs point outwards a bit too much, and i also think that the back of her head needs to be brought out and more mass down the bottom..she's a bit flat at the moment.
God, i hope i'm helping and not sounding like an insufferable know-it-all. Cos i know nada just...commenting ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Hi, I really like the colors in your piece, but I thought the structure needed some work. I did a quick paint over hopefully it can help.

Oh my Gawd... What an unbeliavably great topic!
Three quick paintovers that seem to not only to present three totally different solutions, but also seems to portray three different persons of different age, origin, and expression\outlook, none of them remotely alike the original.
In no particalur order:
One looks like a asian girl in her... twenties perhaps?...
One looks like an angry 40 year old woman...
One looks like... uhh... I don't know... some Dali'esque "Is it a face? Is it a mask? Is it a desert?"...
Well, anyhow...
I doubt if it's ever possible to truly advice on what the artist wants to express, but this was a striking example of advice on what the advicers wanted to express.
I'm sure your intensions were good, and there really are some tips to pick up in the suggestions, and it's a somewhat undefinable face to start with, and it's a lot better to try and help than to just sit and whine like me, but...
... I mean....
... uhh...
Exactly. |

lol, Basse_Ex, i wanted to comment on this pic before but didnt really know what to say and i guess you said it for me.. i'ts got a certain style where it doesnt really matter whether it's anatomicly correct or not Things i noticed other people to point out though were the leaf near her boob and the 'direction' of her chest sortof.. looks a bit off.. but well, if i wasnt drunk right now i wouldnt really type this at all but since i'm at it what the hell, right but i think this piece has got the best chance of looking good going the way it was originally intended .. IMHO.. ![](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |

Yeah, I agree. The painting and the paint-overs are all really unique. It's really fun to see all the different views. ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

whoa, I was away for a few days and thought this thread would surely die long before I get back.
thanks for the many comments, and paintovers. I agree, really unique stuff, but not all necessarily what I was aiming for. The point was not to go for realism, but rather what I portrait comes out like if I'm not looking at real people or photos.
I can see how the chest is off now, same goes with the vegetation being somewhat awkward.
I wanted the shadowed half of the face melt in the darkness, but if it looks stupid, well, duh :). I guess the background shouldn't be green but of the same brown value as the shadow of the face to work (I guess)..)
thanks again!
I'll go read the thread a couple of more times to have it all sink in. |
