This was done with a little mirror I had lying around. The area around the eyes was a bit of guess work, because I wear glasses and I didn't want to include them. Well, critiques, comments, paintovers and such are all welcome. Thanks.

nice work.
my first impression of the picture is that there is a really strong and cold light from the right side, and a pretty warm lightsource from the left side. i also think the ears are pretty red for being inside, perhaps you were just outside though ..
well i'm not an expert at this, it's still a good picture, the hair is really nice |

Looks pretty good - maybe your ears are that red, then again maybe you could desaturate them a little. I found my eyes wanting to look at your ears - wondered if someone had been pulling them. |

Thanks for the replies guys. Maybe I did exaggerate the redness in my ears a bit, when I get the time I'll play around with the ear color.
Further comments anyone? |

Pretty good, but I think your neck may be a bit too long. It just doesn't look right, maybe just alter it a bit. |

Hi L99realm, I agree with the red coloured ear crit. Also I feel that the shadow emphasising the bridge of the nose is a little *too* dark. The contrast makes your eye sockets seem overly deep. Perhaps lighten up that area a bit?
But other than that it is a really well done image. I like the background with the painting and the clock too .
Personally I think you should add the glasses, it would add a lot more character to the image! |

Tried to fix a few of the things you guys mentioned, like the ears and neck. And I added my glasses.

Something's a little funny with the eyes/bridge of nose area...maybe the eyes are too close together? I agree that you should lighten up the shadow by the nose a bit. But that area doesn't bother me much anymore since you added the glasses...and I'm just being nitpicky here, great job. |

The second picture probably more closely resembles you... But, you know something, in comparison to your original. I like the original. The longer neck etc makes you look more elegant. Guess it depends on what you were going for. Great painting either way. |

kat on lap hard to type.
like yours better than mine, but try to simplify the bigger areas of light and dark. Lost edge from chin into sweater. Makes a bigger shadow shape.
I missed your likeness I am sure, and the drawing is what should be fixed first, but here I am playing with local color. Wrong.
I always seem to be picking on you, but I will stop if you want. Just that you asked, seem to get something out of it, and are doing head studies that I am also into right now.
I know it sounds like a cliche, and it is, but paint what you see, not what you think you see!
edit OMG I made you look like Elsie Swinton

Crititcism aside, when I first saw your pic, I thought it was a rendition of "Veronica" from the Capcom video game 'RE: Code Veronica'
Nice work nonetheless |

Thanks for the replies everyone...
spooge demon: I'm glad you took the time to respond, and thanks so much for the illustration. I always seem to pick up some good stuff from you when I get to study things like this that you've done. I think you're right about me needing to simplify the areas of light and dark, and I'm definitely going to try to focus more on that with my next picture. Oh, and feel free to continue "picking on" me ;P -because I know I need it. |

first post in ... years, got tired of this forum a while back cus it was moving too fast, anwyays relm, that is a great portrait, what I do like about it is that it's disproportionate, do you think you have big ears? small eyes? (most people with glasses think they have small eyes)
spooge used pretty correct proportion, but he has the benefit of being better studied in that area,
anyways back on focus, uhm in general just go back into the drawing and check facial centerlines, (and check them on yourself too, no one has a symmetric face) you put the entire face population (nose eyes mouth) slightly to the viewer's left, I think..
other than that... heh your rendering is far beyond my skills but as self portraits go, this one like most contains a lot of personal image, and I like to see that in people's drawings. I generally dont do too many portraits, I've done a few of myself, but didnt like them (dont have a good enough light setup to do somehting like yours, at least not in combination with a good mirror)
gah it's late and I have more drawings to do for tomorow, there wont be much sleeping here tonight |
