This is another dog portrait, this time of a fondly remembered whippet named Cutter, who loved dragonflies. (Not my whippet. Someone else's. A pity.) The .jpg compression ate the subtler colours. I am annoyed. You can still get the general idea, though.

Nice work. I like images that elevate ones conception of animals. This dog is reclined like an ancient queen basking in the life that surrounds her. Forgive me if it is a male dog. The image is feminine to my eyes.

What? No rats?

I'm really loving your color choices in this one.

You have captured "whippetness". I am owned by two whippets, and I can tell you that most paintings of whippets look more like Italian Greyhounds or Greyhounds. This is a whippet. No doubt.

Great painting and a great series. You should charge more than $50!

Thrush - Actually, yes, it IS a male dog--but I'm not offended that it looks female to you. I actually thought it was female too, when I saw the first few reference photos. (Then I saw one that erased all doubt...ha, ha!)

Rob M - Oh, the rats will be back, never fear!

Dr. T.J. Eckleberg - Thank you very much! I actually spent more time sketching this than I did painting it--I must have tried twenty or thirty different poses for the dog before I got one that seemed really true to the reference pics. I normally DO charge more than $50 for this type of work--I'm just doing cheap pet pictures this month as a promotion for my site.

excellent work socar... but I do have a crit or two...

the pinks you've tossed into the body of it makes the dog look almost naked and hairless... which they are not as you probably know... my whippet used to get grey and yellowish tones to his white hair when lit... but oh well =)

the second thing that bothers me is the eye... more specifically the left (our right) eye... it doesn't quite seem credible, and looks almost too cute in a way... might be the shape of it or the black part going up... not sure...

other then that I like it a lot! Nice to hear that people apreciate the beauty of these dogs as most people just seem to think they look like overgrown scrawny rats... oh well... great job as usual anyways socar =)

oh yah, did you get my mail about the missing pic on your page?

No, I didn't get your mail, strata--which one is missing?

P.S. - Thanks for the crits. I never actually thought of the possibility of the dog seeming hairless because of those pink tones. I'll have to remember that next time.

I dunno, it might just be me... if someone else thinks so too then there might be a point, otherwise I'd trust you more than me ugh, wish my parents had a scanner so they could scan our whippet so's I could show you what I mean about the colors... which of course would be silly since you're holding a number of reference pics in your hand anyways

today is a confusing day...

anyways, the top image in your advanced tutorial didn't seem to be working... is your [email protected] (the addy listed on your site) not working?

It's working...but there was a bit of a problem with the server last week--that was probably it. I will fix the tutorial later. It's also available in Epilogue's tech section, if you need it right away.

Nice, I like it! I'm away at school and it makes me miss my dog back home in New York
lol anyway I really like the cocked head it gives the dog character. The washed out greens are very nice.
