I was quite intruiged by the post in digital discussion about starting off a pic by working on the values of the tones and then going in with colour. So I decided just to do a little pic based on that technique. Some people do oil painting this way too, and I had a look at some info about Vermeer's way of working and tried to emulate it in Painter. Unfortunately, the result is a bit crappy, but I figured someone might find the technique useful and make something good with it and I'll go through the steps if anyone's interested. This took about an hour in Painter.

Nice work Ceenda.
This character is quite interesting to look at.
Thanks for sharing the technique.
Take care. |

I like the hair.
Is the lightbulb just a reminder of the light source?
I'm certainly curious about the tonal->color method you used. Do you need different layers for different colors? (sort of like printing or something) |

That's an interesting tecnique. I tried making a grayscale picture into a colored one using a new photoshop layer set to "color" but it didn't work too well.
That's a pretty little strange man, fun hairdo too His collar isn't straight..
What's the little lightbulb in top right corner? and is there a way to get more color variation using this method? |
