Great expression on his face, I also like the gritty details in his armors and sword. He would look great in a large battle scene.

Did you use to work on the character design for Ice Wind Dale?

Gorgeous. Even though it borders on monochromatic, it still retains enough color variations to be really interesting.

Cos, do you have a brother that posts
here as well?

Your painting I like alot.

Do you use a reference. And how
much detail do you draw out before
the painting process. Just curious.

Hey! I can see it now! Very cool painting, Cos. Your paint strokes and rendering style just keeps improving with each new piece. I think if you tweaked the composition a bit, it would really enhance the pic. Here are some suggestions, easily implemented.

Maybe give the top of his head some more room to breath. It looks a bit cramped against that border. The shape you have at the top right corner (it looks like a tower or mountain) is distracting, and it mirrors the sword too much, I think. Maybe show more of it, or get rid of it.

Hope that helps out. Good work on this.

Thanks for the kind words!

Hungago - nah I didn't do any icewind dale stuff. There's three blackisle guys of who I'm aware of that have that similar painting style going on, Justin Sweet, Vance Kovacs and Jason Manley, the style has had quite an impact on me (Sweet is probably my all time fav fantasy artist).

Pretty sure the IWD stuff was Jason Manley's tho. Think I read in an interview that he worked alongside Sweet and Kovacs, and they really helped him in developing his style or something along those lines..

666 - I'll try do a warrior gal soon dude

dizzy - kyri (one post up from you) is my bro, you catch him posting on rare occassions
No reference used for this apart from the bull belt piece, was from something I saw in a book on scythian art.
I try not to use reference in my artwork. Not that I consider it a crime, just how I prefer to develop. I'd rather just do studies seperatley to learn.
I never really put too much into the initial sketch of a painting, I sketch scribbly, block lighting and shadows and work it out as I paint. That way I can keep loose and build up.

Sedone - Cheers for the crits, agree with what you're saying. To be honest, It's not bothering me enough to go back to this, but it's fair points.

Glad to see your name at the top of the board. Keep up the good work man, and do me a favor and register at gfxartist, alright.
