Hi all,
I've been lurking the forums long enough, looking at the incredible work posted by everyone here. Needless to say it's both an inspiring and a humbling experience.
Here's something I worked on for a couple of weeks. The original is sized roughly 5.4k*2.8k, so it made a nice print.
I'm eager to hear all your comments and critique.

It's nice and clean... sunny and positive. Few things could be retouched IMHO... look those stones on the foreground and girls hair has very dark shadows and very light parts also... contrast i mean... but the rest of the girl is kindof unsaturated and without contrast.... and islands are too blurry compared to the water... but i realy like the picture

I love the girl. She has such a wonderful, friendly expression. It makes me want to join her on the rocks and have a picnic. |

really nice image. i think its a bit off balance though. the right side, top and bottom corners are really dominating the image, while the left is very empty in comparison. i would almost consider in puting a house, light house or boat in the distance on the left to try and balance it out. white seems to be a good idea i think. i really like the waves, they might need to soften up a little though. really nice image. |

I saw your picture earlier this morning, and I really didn't have anything to say.. But I came back and saw it again this evening.. And I really like it.. I only have a a few crits..
1. Like the person above stated it is a bit heavy on the right side.. Maybe make the cloud thinner.. bring some more of the brillant blue to the right.
2. If the waves are white capped it means it is rather windy out and her hair and clothes would have a lot more motion to em.
3. Some said there wasn't enough shadow on her, I would have to agree give her a little more depth, but other than that nice job man..
Keep it up!

I've been looking at this for minutes.. I do like it alot! beautiful colors.. nice water and I do like your solid looking rocks.
i agree with the crits above, but I think you can add some more hue changes to the rocks. look at any natural rock.. it really isnt just gray. also I'd expect a separation of wet and dry areas on the rock |

Thank you everyone for your positive comments.
When I was painting this (if that is the correct word for using a wacom) it was surprising how "understanding the nature of things" plays so big a role in achieving a believable look.
For me, the skies came out easy, but the rest of it was a struggle. Water is a tough one, but it was actually the rocks that I kept repainting over and over again.
It's true that the turbulent wind in the image should make her hair and skirt move more, but I found it extremely difficult to get a short skirt like that to flap in the wind, particularly with her legs in that position.
Wet parts of the rock were on my list of things to do, but let's pretend I had a good excuse typed here for not painting them.
This has been a good lesson, and while I won't be making changes to that piece, I'll make sure the lessons learnt here will benefit the next one |
