I saw the speed-paint version, this is great.

Something about the ground bothers me, i think it could use a little more light. If you added just a few spots of light to show that the shadow on the ground is being cast by trees off-scene it might become more interesting.

this is supposed to be a scenery from our summer place in northern Finland, Lake Kitka.
tried to do it in a semi-matte style, but I guess that purpose was lost during the process. still quite happy with it, though.
any comments and feedback welcome!

oh, and it's not a copy from a photograph.
reference was used for a couple of the trees and the far bank but as I got the flow going on I discarded all the photos and used only my imagination.

What res did you do the original picture in? And did you "draw" the things first then go back and color them? It's an amazing painting! Great job!

My first post!

This painting is so incredible, I love it.
I love landscape painting. I hope you
have more paintings on this site.

I think that suggestion about shadows
cast by trees out of frame was an interesting point. But its fabulous the
way it is, and from your imagination,
you must have a photographic memory.

Oh ya, very nice how you can display
such realism with a such minimal painting technique, I don't really want
to say minimal, I hope you know what
I mean. It looks like every brush stroke
has a purpose.

cool pic! great form.

Hate to be the bringer of bad news.. but. Is the sky really that blue!? saturation I mean.. and the other colours too. I know its summer and you want things to look that way.. but. You know what I mean.

Hope that helps.

thanks for the comments everyone!
nova: great point there, I'll start fixing the ground asap. those off-scene-tree cast shadows actually are there already, I'll just need to exaggerate them a little.

the_monkey: thanks

golongria: it was 1800*something. and I just started blocking the colours in without any background sketch to work from.

dizzypope: thanks! check the speed painting thread, I've posted many pics there.
I try to simplify everything I draw (with alternating success), I think that the more you can depict with fewer brush strokes the better.

eetu: niinp. loska lent.

ian jones: uhm, actually it can be that blue. I know it can strike as appearing quite surreal but once you've seen those orange tree trunks and a sky very blue this seems more natural.
but yes, I think the sky would look better with less saturation, at least in the top part of the pic.

whee, thanks you all for the feedback

thanx gawain! you saying that makes me feel the pic was a success

I'm having trouble adding detail to the pic, it's losing its looseness as I try to do it.
It will start resembling more like a photo which is not what I intend to achieve.

any ideas there? or should I leave it almost as it is? zooming in 200% and adding those leaves one by one is one thing I for sure dont want to do.

I'll post the updated pic sometime next week when it's actually looking a bit different than the current one.

If you want to keep going with it, try
a very whimsical approach. It will give
the painting interest, movement,
and you'll still maintain the loseness.

Your painting is so strong it can easily
support some carefree and create strokes.

what about painting some atmosphere underneath the tree tops. Like particals are catching light.

Not heavy handed of course im talking
very airy, just a hint of diffused light under those tree tops.

So the tree trunks are orange and the sky is blue?

It seems that the highlights and light direction on the tree trunks should match the sky more.

right now it seems that the trees are lit by a warm sunset sunrise type light.

I'm just asking, I think its wonderful

godamn this looks exactly like a scene from our family sommer holiday place :-)
veeery nice.. kind of like a 'Plein Air' painting
my only crit would be that the saturation seem just a bit too high (but that could just be my monitor)
love your landscapes palladia mors, keep it up
