this is one of the production matte I did for the movie Ice Age. I did lots of color keys but did some matte paitnigs.Once the movie is out, I will post more.
Hope people in the US go see it this weekend(3/15) though it's not the greatest animated film, it's not too bad. And let's support our already dry industry!

thats really cool looking. i wanted to go and c this flick, probably grab the boys, hit the bar, get tanked and go se it i think. (its the usual lets get ripped n c a movie ritual).

anyways, for matte painting, in this circumstance, did you do the turqouise background for it? or the critter as well. matte painting i think is really interesting, but im not to clear as to where is it applying for this image. i guess im just a bit to knew at it. anyways, great image.

Wow........
VERY nice. What software did you use? Did you start from a render?
Very talented....
Can't say more!
Actually, the company I work for paid for all of us to go and see the movie tomorrow!
I have no doubt it will be excellent.

David

By the way, do you know Pete Franco? A friend of mine in Austin. I think he knows you.

I love that matte painting. Unfortunately I don't really know so much about matte painting (what is the special way it is done? DOes it need special paint? what is the difference between matte and oil painting?)

I don't think Ice Age looks that bad. I saw the trailer and just love it! I think its a genious for your studio to include a real showstealer by the name of SCRAT! Its what all showstealer should be!

I'm definetly doing you the honour of seeing it!

thanks everyone!

her'es another one!

you'll know how this is used once you see the film, but basically I had to paint these creatures inside the ice because we had no money or
time to build them in 3D. I worked with Peter DeSeve who designed these critters and I painted them in Phothohop. The challenge was that
I had absolutely no referrence at all except for Peter's drawings. But his drawings were solid enough that I could manege to fake
it.(hopefully!)

let's see....

Daijoobu --thanks

landmaster--thanks! Yeah, Ill try my best to look for your work. It's not easy to check everything in this forum since there're so many but
I'll try!

jabber--you know the answer from above.
yes, I painted everything you see.

-HoodZ- thanks. let's hope the movie'll do decent.

n8 --yes, it's released worldwide. In australia too.

Vyle --thanks! don't expect too much from the film though! It's a light film.
and yeah, i know pete Franco. He's one of the most talented guy I know. say hi to him!

jeromoo --it's painted in photoshop, but matte paintings used to be painted in oil. It's 2d backdrops to match the live action or 3d render in the films.

BooMSticK -thank

SolarC -thanks

LOL...seen those in the film today. Not the best CG film ..more of a renter but not to bad all together, but not nearly the quality of Monsters INC. Your matte paintings are real nice though!

I finally saw it today, and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was very different from all the other cg movies for kids: original, very funny, and excellent graphical quality. A MUST SEE for any digital artist (or on the way to be ).
Congratulation, very good job!!!

I'm waiting for that movie since first trailer. I'm waiting for this movie since "Bunny"! All visuals from "Ice Age" which I saw are fanatastic!
BUT I STILL HAVE TO WAIT becouse the release date here in Poland is seventh June.
ARGHH!
It's not fair.

tomek

BTW. Dicet, your work is great. Blue Sky rocks.

the thing I'm most excited about Ice Age-wise is how it manages to mix teh "newfangled" CG animation with classical animation, looney-tunes style, i.e. the exxagerated facial expressions, exciting animated movement, etc... anyone know what I'm rambling about?

edit
-----
ooh, and I'm DEFINTELY going to see this film. Both as an admirer of cg movies, but also because this is what i DREAM of doing. I jsut don't know how to go about getting to that point...

Awesome dicet.

I remembered these guys last night while watching Ice Age with my kids. We loved it...hah...you should have seen their little faces, Man...All lit up in wonder.

I didn't want to tell them that every 11,500 years there is an Ice Age; Like clockwork. And that we're currently at the 11,500 mark from the last one and this time all evidence is showing that that we're in for the greatest Ice Age in 500,000 years any day now.

With that said...you all have a great night. ;-P

dicet,

I'll definitely be buying this movie when it comes out on DVD. Thanks for the great post and even cooler artwork. ;-)

that was one of the best parts of the movie.. great stuff. I thought that some of thebackgrounds throughout the movie seemed rather blurry and not very high quality... they really looked like plain flat images at points but nevertheless It was still a cool movie.

I loved the whole UFO thing.. that was great.
