Hi again,
I m back to show my recent work to you.
This one is done (take a look into work in progress section for development). It's a thread opening picture for a german art forum. It was fun to paint but I wasn't going for perfectionism.

This one is much more important to me because I want to use it as an application for a 2d Artist job. It's 95 percent done (some textures will be added...). Now I would like to get some crits. I know there
are some mistakes in the anatomy but I won't change that anymore. I would prefer some
crits on lightning and realism (It doesn't look as real as i want it to right now), cause I just don't know how to make it look more real. I know it's something about saturation colour value and lighting but I don't know how to go on .

The last one is a promotion flyer for my (still ugly) homepage.

the second and third one really rocks
More realism?hmm I think the main problem is that you rendered all materials nearly the same way.
His armor maybe would have more shiny highlights(--->from the energy-blast) and deeper darks?
IMO the Background is much too bright and is taking the focus away from the character a bit.
I played a bit around with the hues, thought you would be interested. http://silber.monoid.net/cyborg-modified.jpg

good luck with your portfolio

I'm really liking that second pic. One thing: is the cyborg in motion or is it holding that pose?
Also, more contrast between lighter and darker areas would be good, and a brighter concentration of light around the energy blast.
One last thing: The wall, with all its scratches and holes, should (imo) have sharper, clearer lines, possibly with much deeper shadows.
Hope that helped, nice job.

The middle piece, the one with the cyborg guy, might work better if you pushed the background into the distance with some atmospheric haze. Right now, you've got darks in there that are just as intense as the ones in the foreground, and as a result my eye doesn't quite know what to focus on.

I love the top one though.

actually, I'd like it if the gun came out a little bit further. Currently, the end of it overlaps so closely with the edge of the column behind it that it sort of divides the image in half. Overlapping a little bit like the foot does might fix this. Love both 1 and 2.

Beautifull work, I really like this. Followed the progress on the desert figure.

Anyway I've been so free to do a small paintover on the second image.

Well here's my attempt, what I kinda miss in the image is how materials are rendered it's all the same material, no highlight, specular lighting.

It's really minor changes (the figure), and it could look better but it should point out what I wanted to show.

OMG!

I look at this work and at the things I do and I feel like throwing it all in the trash... .
Wow, that's soo cool!
I love Pic 1 and 2!
I don't think the colors should be changed.
The way they are the picture has sth like an unique note an artist should have... .

Soulfuct's way of texturing the walls looks very cool, too!

I think what duality did was quite effective, but just a bit too drastic. His idea to seperate the planes in the image with warm/cool contrast works really well.

Of course, with an original as kickass as this it really is hard to go wrong. Awesome work, you've improved a LOT man.

i saw the first pic in wip, and didn't think much of it. i'm very impressed by your other two pics though.

i agree with duality, the first thing i noticed about jumpyshooty is that it all seems on one plane. the third one is tres groovy. i love you you've integrated the flat-shaded and more painterly look together, it's very effective.

you call that an ugly site? dear oh dear. it's very cool, though personally i wouldn't rely purely on flash.

wow I don't know what to say, I never got that much excellent replies, thank you very much.

silber: You are right everything is rendered the same way and there is no pint for the
eye to rest on no focus. Thank you for the overpaint.
By the way did you ever tkake a look at the digital decoy forum? If not it's worth to!
I'll give the url if you are interested.

iByrn: He is jumping about that destroyed wall. I'll keep your crits in mind when I finish this one.

balistic: right the shadows are to dark in the bg. I'll change that

kahboom: I understand the promblem u pointed out but I allready tried to make the gun longer and it didn't look good (the arm looks to long than), so I won't fix this, sorry.

Soulfuct: I nearly fell of the chair when I saw your overpaint! It's so much more alife, it has some kind of "soul". Mine is dead. But you went a little to far in my opinion. I love the way you put the focus on the character and I love the textures.
I've got some serious questions. It would be graet if you got some time to answer if not it doesn't matter you allready helped me very much.

How did u get these textures, is it a photo used as texture and a filter put over it?

How did you get the light changed, is it just a layer setting (like a contrast layer)?

How long did this overpaint take?

And the last but most important one: The first pic (spaceman) looks as dead as the cyborg before these overpaints. Do you know a
simmilar way to get it alive? What would you do with that one?

Again thank you very much!!!

pest: Thank you for the paintover! I love the boot! Looks much better now. I'll change that, too.

-Tepox- and AP[ol]LO: I don't understand why u like my version better than the other ones but thank you anyway.

duality: I like that too because it calms down the pic. It's not as confusing as my version anymore but it's a little to much in my opinion.
I'll play around with that idea a little, thank you for the paintover.

Angry Koala: I agree with you duality went a little to far but it's a very good idea.
Did you mean I improved or soulfuct?

[666]Flat: Danke h Alter .

ken: It's strange that there are some people who like the first one best. It' s ok but not much more.
I like that combination of pixel and vector style very much and I'll try to do some simmilar but better looking pics in future (talking of the third pic).
Na my homepage IS ugly but there will be a new one in a few weeks.

I'm sorry for the bad english again, hope there aren't that much mistakes .

awesome work nil, love those first 2. Personally I like the original over the reworked versions. The filters and overlayed textures version just looks cheap imo, ruins your painting. I agree his suit and some other areas could have more difference in the materials tho, scratches, dents, etc.

I think that this is really excellent work, I think that my number one idea to contribute to you would be this. In the second picture, where the guy is blasting his arm weapon at someone, he seems to jumping over the short wall that his hand is resting on and while that makes perfect sense, I also get the feeling like he's just suspended there. I would not reccommend this to just anyone but your skills are abviously solid enough to attempt this and that is to play with the idea of simulating something like a motion blur. If I were to choose something in this picture maybe starting around the knee or shins and culminating at the feet to show the quick action taking place, it is basically a trick that simulates both human vision and photography. Anyway, it's beautiful stuff. Keep at it.
