Yet another Capcom pin-up for Roundeye's contest. I tried to reinvent Chun Li as a real Chinese girl, instead of the weirdly-proportioned, pale character she's turned into at Capcom over the years. Its far from perfect, but the deadline is looming, and I've got other obligations to attend to. Photo-Paint 10, no reference.

Nicely rendered! Her face looks really young though, like 12 or so. Also, isn't it a bit weird that she's in a misty swamp looking place undressing? I love misty swamp looking places, it just seems odd :] Great work!

Thanks for the feedback. I've gotten the age comment before . . . I was going for about 17-18, since I think she was supposed to be 19 in SF2. I'd concede that the combination of her short stature (5'1"ish) and roundish face could make age kind of ambiguous. Primarily I wanted to make a version of her that was more believable as a toughened fighter . . . more Mongolian than Cantonese.

The mist was initially more blue, and less, swampy, but I thought it looked a little too magical/fantasy-ish:

I'd like to point out that real Chinese girls don't look like that. o.o I suggest looking at some CPOP/HK gossip magazines like Sing Tao, Ming Pao, Next mags. They have lots of great pics of stars and stuff...or you can just look online for CPOP and I'm sure you'd find tons of pop star pics.

Chun Li lives in HK, so she's sure to look more HK than back water China.

Exactly. We already know what the characters look like. No sense drawing them exactly the same way.

The hips came out really good.

There's twist...and then there's fact I think. Chun Li's from HK...it's like twilight zone if she comes like that from HK. lol

It's probably just the age thing that really bothers me.

She looks more East-Asian or Pacific Islander than Chinese.
Prolly by rendering her face longer you'll make her look younger.

I actually also dont think she looks like a 12 year old. At least 15 I would guess. And if it was the goal to make her look more like Mongolian then from my point of view you managed quite well. All together I like it.

I think it looks very good and she definitely dont look like she's 12...
Her head may be a bit big, though.
I'm a bit surprised at Kuren's offensive approach..chill out bro..

Good work Balistic!

Actually, there are significant anatomical variations between different populations . . . I was watching a thing the other night about how certain ethnicities have a bony protuberance on the back of their skull called an occipital bun. Supposedly in peoples with heavier brows, it acts as a counterbalance to keep the neck muscles from being overworked.

And no, Hong Kong is not in Mongolia, but I'm pretty sure there are people of Mongolian descent who live there.

hmm a break down of the different chinese cultures might be helpful

starting from the north:
Mongolians is very close to Russia as we know and some of them tend to look like a mix between chinese and caucasians. Northern Mainland chinese are taller, have slightly whiter skin due to the environment and their diet, which consists of mostly flour foods like noodles and dumplings.

Souther mainland chinese tend to be darker and slightly shorter in general because of the harsh sun and rice being the staple diet. They may have rounder faces and/or slighly different nose shape.

Many HK women differ from mainland because they have a longer face shape and higher cheek bones. Many of them have more pertruding chins. They have a different "look" and it's hard to explain. you just have to see!

Of course these are only general guidelines since ppl come in all shape and sizes.

btw, China's captial is Beijing. Hong Kong was under British rule until 1997 when it was returned to China. That is why ppl are reluctant to call Hong Kong citizens "Chinese".

Thanks turnip . . . I suppose I could have been confusing the Mongolian look with the central Chinese one . . . I can definitely spot the differences, but as to where they're found, I don't have first hand experience.

I find ethnic facial morphology to be really interesting . . . partly because I've got kind of a non-standard face for a white guy (full lips, wide-ish nose), and I'm always trying to work out where different aspects of that came from in my genetic heritage.

Check out http://www.alllooksame.com/ . . . its tangentally related to the issue.

anyways im chinese and yeh..ive been to china and taiwan. people in taiwan and hk tend to look and dress like the asians you see in Namerica. China is a lot poorer, and the people there...look kinda different.. i duno how to say it..but..they look different. they have bigger foreheads (i think) like zhangziyi. anyways..nuff said. byebye
