Joe Cosman and I have finished our entry for the cgtalk.com challenge:
The theme for the contest was "post-apocalyptic", and there were certain criteria that had to be met. Characters had to have face protection and a weapon, and environments needed to depict a specialized entrance and some form of plant life.
Joe modeled the character, and I handled the shaders, environment, and lighting.
His website is at http://joe.microcosman.com , mine is in my signature below.
Comments welcomed. |

Very nice work from the 2 of you.
I have a minor suggestion, the 2 guys look like mirrored statues both standing like that. Maybe change the position of the legs on the farther away figure? Small change, but it would mean a lot, i think.

Hey that's pretty sweet balistic! Nice but I think you could improve it a bit. First, I'm not sure what type of lighting you want to achive (post-nuclear sun eh?) but this looks more like an interior scene... Next, pay more attention to foreground - that ground around the character covered by a same texture with a same level of details. Plus it's very clean.
Good luck!

this is super duper.
so regarding the way they hold their guns... well hell, without all the low-lying brush and bushes of the apocolyptic future I'd convert my weed-whackers into bigass weapons as well.
diggin it, hardcore. hehe |

Great pic, Balistic, but there is one problem I have with it; even with the different rotations the character in the distance still immediately registers as a duplicate of the front guy. The distance guy needs his own pose, with the gun at a different angle at least.

Great rendering Balistic.
I like both your perspective and the realism.
Reminds me of the Fallout games. Those were some of the coolest games I had played.
Nice work. ;-) |

I agree, great piece! It's very nice to see that you have eliminated the 3d'ishness of the painting. Looks painted for large parts! great stuff both of u.

Good to see another pic from you Balistic! Your attention to lighting and atmosphere in your 3d scenes is awesome. You and Joe seem to be quite the team.
Nice work! |

Goddamn, balistic! Very nice! It's like a poster image for Fallout 3.
The lighting and perspective works beautifully, and the design of the guards looks dude, too. There could be any number of scientific reaons while their eyes are so high up on their heads, or at least why the googles sit so high. Funky retro gas masks, too.
The best bit is how you've modelled chips and dents into the edges of the bunker. How many game modellers are there that don't bother to do that these days?
Agree with Sumaleth on the poses, though. It'd be a good touch to add.
Yeah, the torpedo infantry was mine. Pales in comparison to this, though.
Hope you win it, balistic |

I do find it hard to figure out, on the helmets wouldnt the eyeholes be too high up and too far apart to see out of without a complex mirror system? maybe move them in and down, this would also remove the insect-likeness from the two characters. |
