Eh, it's a mech

I know you guys aren't really that interested in Japanese anime stuff, but this is a "mobile suit" from a series based on the Gundam anime series...Maybe it's not to your liking...I posted it at another board, and one of the guys suggested that i lighten up the dark areas and add more reflective/ambient lighting...

I like the colour variations on the robot's body and the light values are pretty accurate as well. The mech design itself looks good, too.

The colour variations on the tree trunks look a little wrong, I think. I mean, if the overall colour of them is meant to be light grey, they look like gum trees or something. If they're meant to be moss-covered since the robot is in the jungle, try texturing them with some lumps of lichen or tangling vines.

Overall, very nice!

And err, AHEM! Halo? PC game? I've never heard of it

*scratches head* This is my first serious piece done on Painter...I dunno the controls and stuff ^_^;;. I don't think I have very good control with the brushes yet (heck, I don't even know how to manipulate bristles and such!). A little more help would be appreciated.

I did a quick touch up to explain this:
I think that the cool composition you have, should use the diferent dimensions between foreground and background with more atmosphere. By using different ways (here I used fog and colors turning to a slightly more blue and unsaturated tone as well as a blur) you give much more deepness to the whole thing.
The other thing I would have done (but no time!) would be to make the bushes go smaller and smaller with the distance, which would give a much more massive feel to your robot (at the moment he seems to be human size, but that might be what you want?) and eventually some birds flying in front to give an idea of scale.
My two cents

David
Oh, and I forgot, a good advice that my painting teacher always told me : never use pure white or pure black, it will probably kill your colors (that's why I corrected his back, and the trunks, receiving some kind of greenish light coming from the overall plants atmosphere).

Hey David,

I imported the Painter file into Photoshop for editing, and I've been trying to desaturate that background to approximately what it looks like in your touch up version...no luck, though. Can you take me step by step through the process? I understand that you don't have much time, but any little tip would do (never really read any tutorials on these things)

This is your first real attempt at Painter? Wow, very nice work then for someone who isn't familiar with the brushes.

I've never used Painter myself, only Adobe Photoshop, so software wise I couldn't tell you what to use. But if you can get a fine brush with a low opacity of green paint and stroke small rough patches over the trunks, you'd get some moss-like detail.

No problem!
Take in account that this is the way I work, I am sure other people would have 100 other ways to do it and probably better ones!
And the fact that I don't remember exactly what I did last time

First, to avoid any white area, I applied a multiply layer on the top of the whole pic. (something like a R:83 G:115 B:66 ) that I put at 55 % opacity.
Then I collapse everything, I select with the lasso the area I want to brighten/desaturate. I apply an image /ADJUST /brightness contrast and put the brightness to +45 and the contrast to -8.
On the top of that you need (with adjust color balance) to add a bit more blue (push the blue slider to the right until you are happy): the further away, the more blue and unsaturated and bright.

Then I do the same with just the background trees (selected with the lasso tool again) to which I apply +56 in brightness and 2 as contrast. I use the same selection to apply a gaussian blur to the same part (the bckgnd trees) at 3.4 pixels.

That's the base, on the top of that you need to paint over the robot who has lost to much colors in the operation (like raising the lights on the armor)and paint the trees so that they are not that dark (as well as raising highlights too).
For the robot something like R247 G255 B199 is very bright (the last color before adding any white if you can't avoid it).
Is that what you were asking??
Hope it helps!

David
