A portrait of my darling little Jah dressed as a thief. I took a ton of photos of him all dressed up with different types of lighting and stuff to use as a reference. I think taking my own photos to use as a reference works well for me

Thanks Rip... actually I'm glad you mentioned the nose. I knew there was something off with the piece. Someone else pointed out to me that its a slightly different color than the rest of the face. I also noticed that the left nostril seems flared or something... tweaked it a bit:

wow wow wow wow wow. I love the lips and the condisending stare. reminds me of rembrandt for some reason. probably because of the contrast and lighting. very emotional and cool Jez. kudos.

Looks great! The nose seems overly flat to me, more than would be natural. I think its because you have the same value down the front/center of it, so that its not at all rounded.

this is nice! I think that the cape should extend more to the left of the picture...or just a hint of it at least...

The nose still looks odd IMO...maybe the nostril furthest away from us should be darker...add some projected shadows maybe?

good stuff jezebel...I went into "the archives" a while ago and saw some of your earlier stuff, you've really improved a lot! And it's great to see such improvement because it motivates me Keep it up

hi Jez, these last two pics have really been nice.

If you want (only if) I could make some suggestions about edges, and maybe the nose problem. It would help to see the ref, though.

Hey everyone...thanks for all the nice comments again. *beams*

As for the ref, here it is:
http://div.dyndns.org/EK/jah.jpg

He actually does have a really flat/wide nose.

Hello Jessie.

This is actually the first image I have seen belonging to you. You are a real accomplished artist.

I think you sent me an email once - something about a dragon I drew? I could be wrong though.

have a look here...

The cast shadow of the hood on the cheek is the Main Event, and is a cast shadow, so go ahead and make it nice and crisp. If you make this an area of maximum contrast and sharpness, you have something to judge the rest by. The jaw line in a large radius form, so make that nice and soft. If you look at the lit area of the face on yours, the edges all around are of a similar character and width and softness.

I could pull in more differentiation in the shadow areas, but always keeping the edges and contrast and detail subordinate to the edges and detail in the lit areas. The brighter the light, the more detail, color, contrast etc are present. I have kinda exaggerated this in this sketch. In the mouth, there is much more information in the lit side, nothing in the shadow.

In life drawing one idea from the old masters is there is no such thing as a concave form. You concern yourself with only positive or "displacing" forms. The appearance of hollowness comes from where two positive forms come together. Think of the nostril like that. It is not a hole drilled into the nose, but the nostril is the absence of a form where several other complex forms come together. I screwed up the nose too. It's a toughie.

The far nostril is behind the central part of the nose, it is hard to see in the ref, but it is there. Think about the nose like in graffiti 1, results in the shapes of the nostril, like in 2.

Nice work all around. Jezebel love the mood you've captured in the original. it's sumptuous and well rendered without crossing the line into cliched. Very nice work. Spoogmeister, nice follow up. I Dig the form lighting and energy but I miss the dark mystery from the original.

On the nose issue...
Jezebel, I would like to see some specular highlights to set off the shape of the nose, (Study Spooge's work.) and perhaps a touch of red to give the character a little more life and ... ahem... character. I think both of your issues with your respective probosci occur from a missing key shadow defined by the nose which would fall across the upper lip. Without it the nose, like mentioned in previous posts, looks flat. It's cheap fix and will help give that nose the volume it desires and afix it squarly to her face.

Great job guys/gals/whatever.

Brian

Thanks for the additional crits everyone. And wow... a spooge overpaint! How cool is that?

I'm going to try and work on the stuff you mentioned there. I'm also going to take that same advice and apply it to my knight painting. I believe that will help...

Overall I'm happy with how this came out, but as always... it could use a little more work. Thanks all
