I like it!
I do have a general crit, though it's not really to do with this picture in general. I dunno, alot of your work, apart from being very cool, kinda makes me think that you could afford to be a alot bolder when it comes to light and shade. I notice that alot of your pics are dark, which fits the atmosphere obviously, but gives the impression that you're not too keen to have some really hard, sharp, contrasting areas, rather choosing to blend between every area of light and shade.
Anyway, I think the paint-over is great, but perhaps play around with some really crisp and sharp areas of light and shadow.

Sorry, I forgot to reply. Bumping two weeks old thread without a pic isn't natural to me.. so there's an update above (about an hour of refining).
First off, thanks a lot for the comments everyone!
Ceenda, I couldn't agree more. In reality metal (not rusty) usually (depends on the environment) has very high value range, and radical change of colours and sharp reflections and highlights, but I always tend to kill the highlights and reflections so the focus isn't lost by any chance.
What do you think of the update? |

Hey all...hmm, I came across this thread. When I clicked on the thread my initial reaction was F***! I think it's an awesome job. And as for the contrastiness, it's just matter of a taste. I too tend to paint muted with medium ambient light with some highlights for emphasis, with most of the picture in some shadow. I think that's what Bg's going for. Well, Finland has low light anyway.
BTW, I'm not done with this yet but I've decided to post before it was finished. Ed--

You should have posted that in it's own thread. You are like the master of designing robots!! ![](images/smiles/icon_eek.gif) |

KenMasters, drawing all the details would have taken twice the time it took now.
How much did nVIDIA pay you for that name Yeah, that's excactly what I was going for, and metal is tough one to do that way because of the highlights and stuff. I cracked up when I read the last sentence Hahaha!
Btw. Eddie, the robot is looking very, very good! |

HOLY MOTHER OF FOOK! Damn that looks like you're a professional engineering draftsman, equipped with creativity galore! Dude you should design the killer robots for upcoming movies like Robocop X (or wutever, in case there will be a sequel anytime anyway) which should be modelled exactly like you drew 'em. THOSE MECH BASTARDS WOULD KICK SO SERIOUS ASS I WOULD GO INTO THE CINEMA EVEN IF THE PLOT SUCKED BIG DONKEY FLOPPY DI-K!
And regarding the pic which is discussed in this thread: looks sweet, great coloring job! Atmosphere bonus!! |
