second time ever used painter...here's the
result. no reference used.
I think I like the program (painter classic) but it has some MAJOR flaws in it such as
the gut-wrenching zoom tool and the head-hammering tendency to reset the painting tool used to factory settings.
but hey, here's the image:
(crits, comments, anything, appreciated)

I like it! My suggestions:
Add more depth to it, and get more details in the eyes (very important).
Painter is a bitch to get used to, its sometimes very slow, the zoom is bad, but i have made pictures with it that can not be done with Pshop. I work with both and i use Painter as a opaque painting tool whereas Photoshop let me put transparant strokes upon each other and get a kind of watercolor look.

pops: i forgot to mention that this was made rather quickly, so it's only a sketch...
but thanks for the tip, if I feel like finishing it I'll start with the eyes. they do need details indeed.
twacle: just the oil paint tool.

is there a method to paint smooth surfaces in painter? like in photoshop?

nulltygre: ummm....it could be I just started doodling away and had a vision of those early 1900's b/w photos in mind so there could have been a slight influence of taylor.
weird.

Very nice portrait. Some crits.. There's a bit too much tiny scribbling and small-stroke doodling here and there esp in the lower right corner and in the hair. It would look better you used more bigger bold strokes in the areas with less interest and saved the detailing/small strokes to the areas (lips, eyes) where you want to lead the viewer's eye.

What do you mean by smooth surfaces? Like without paper grain maybe? I'm quite sure you can do pretty much everything and more in Painter (what comes to the look of brushes and painting result) than you would in Photoshop.

Ville

rhomb I absolutely agree with you.
there is just too much useless scribbling and noodling, thanks for pointing it out.
here's the more finished version, I did a quick paintover with bigger strokes in the hair and some fixes here and there.
comments?
