I love the face and beard (nose especially!) But his hat looks quite a bit off. Dunno why yet though. |

The hat is especially odd. It looks more like a peice of shaped cloth on a flat surface than a hat with depth.
Remember where the light is coming from and remember that the hat is a 3d shape itself, and that the main cone shape should dictate how it's shaded more than the wrinkles on the hat.
A quick rework of the hat, totally different style from the actual picture, but gives the basic idea. |

It looks angry
Maybe the black lines could be lightened up. The dark shadow betwen the face and beard makes it look a little like a paste-on beard or something.

it's smoking a cigar, I think it's supposed to look angry
It looks really neat, I would say make the cigar longer, but this is the finsihed works area, so i guess it's finished. |

thanks for the comments. you are totally right about the hat. just goes to show ya what mistakes can show up if you dont think something through. im not gonna rework it cause i already gave it to the guy and he loved it. good thing he hasnt learned anything from sijun
all the black lines and stuff are also cause of bad planning. i started this out as a black and white "ink" sketch in painter, and tried to convert it into a painting. oh well, live and learn.
[edit] here is the template of the site i made for him, using this image... click ...i hope it's tacky enough for him
