Here's a painting I did today using some photo reference. I even went so far as to document my process. You can find a step by step breakdown here:

Painting a SuperModel

I'm not pretending to be any sort of expert on this, but I had taken the time to save out some intermediate steps, and I thought it might be interesting to someone here.

It's impressive to see how you build up an artwork, starting out from simple blocks of color... Must be hard to do.

Arghhhhh!!

I can NEVER see any of your images, Francis. That includes your entire GT website. I wonder why my new computer/ISP is excluding your webhost completely. It pisses me off because I like your stuff!

Grrrr. Someone be kind and repost the image for poor little me who never gets to see Francis's kickass stuff anymore?

awesome work francis, and i just wanted to say that, that was probably the most informative step by step in that it demonstrates how to get such solid looking paintings out of photoshop(which has had me completely baffled, atleast up until this point) thanks!

I love your style and the follow-along is absolutely wonderful. I'm starting to get deeper into light and color and am getting frustrated, but this is motivating.
The only thing I can bring up about this piece, though, is that my eye keeps leaping to her foot (no fetish involved), which is dragging it away from how nice the rest of it is. There's no natural guide to allow the gradual transition through the image. There is the face and upper body, then the foot.
But thank you for the step by step, Francis, and a very nice painting.

Yeah! Everyone should post more step-by-steps of their work (and remember, snapshots of ones progress isn't always a "tutorial").

The result is very light and airy, and I like it! Interesting to see the extensive use of low opacity when blocking forms. The best thing I ever did was to turn off opacity until forms where done to avoid washed out colours (and 11 passes of "a little more colour to get contrast"). You don't have such a problem, and the small leftovers of the early stages gives a certain (victoria's sectret?) glow.

That's awesome, Francis! Great step by step too - I think you nearly have me motivated enough to try a human subject for my next 'experiment'. Muchos Gracias Senior!

Great job, great tutorial... Yeah, that Victoria's Secret catalog is just a big models resource.

You work very much like I do, except that I use the lasso tool as much as the pen tool initially to establsh shapes and areas of color and also to refine detail.

Thanks for sharing your tut.

Amazing how far you've come with your painting Francis, it really is, over the last few years. Nice job. The face comes off a little funny cause of the way you just made the nose flat via the underlight(it doesn't softly curve around the side of her nose at all, which makes it seems angular). Great work!
