What does everyone think about the computer industry right now? The gaming branch isin't so good? How about webdesign? I was just thinking today, I have no clue what I wanna do in a few years when I graduate. |

From my personal experiences--if you are a kickass 3D artist, you'll never be out of work. You can do both games and film, even commercials.
I know because I'm NOT a 3D artist, and I have a hard time getting good gigs.

I doubt webdesign is in any reasonable shape right now. I have a couple of friends who do design for small business's in their area, doing fairly well, but I imagine any other gig could be fairly difficult to come by right now. I just interviewed a guy who was making 70K a year at his previous job, he had been looking for a job for 3 months. Needless to say, he's not going to be making anywhere near that now.
With that said, I wouldn't sorry too much if you've still got a few years left in school.

*sigh*
Believe me, I intended to almost 3 years ago. The problem is, everytime I sit down to do some tutorial, or try to model something myself, I get so frustrated and bored. I would keep thinking, "Man, I could be drawing or painting right now, instead, I'm pulling these vertices around for hours and not seeing any decent results."
I love 3D art, but maybe I'm just not cut out for it. I know if I get over the initial hump, I can be really good at it, but I just don't have the patience.
Well, after this current situation(me being out of a game job), I've decided that NO MATTER how frustrated I get, I HAVE to become good at 3D, or else I'll still have a hard time getting a good gig the next time I'm looking for work(this is assuming I even find a gig now). |

Web Design is in no reasonable shap at all!
I've been looking for work for quite a while now... and both in Sweden (where I'm from) and Dublin (where I live) are wiped pretty much clean... at least in Dublin there have been NO available jobs at all for over a month... not a single one entered in the recruitment sites.... sweden is pretty much the same... but for different reasons...
it'll probably bounce back with time, since it's a field that the companies can't really live without... but right now, there's square shit around.
Lots of designers working in call centres in Dublin though =) |

web design is fine for me right now. got a job doing it for universities, and do freelance for local companies. There are still tons of people who just don't wanna learn to make a website. So that helps. |

Take some college degree at your area. I'm positive that it will motivate and teach you alot for a short period of time.
Right now, i believe that 2d art is dying, thats why i'm trying so hard to learn 3d, hopefully there won't be such thing as 4d in the future |

There are succesful 3D artists who can't really draw. An ability to create interesting visual concepts is really all you need, and usually that goes hand in hand with drawing. But you don't have to be great at drawing to have that ability. But you had better be damn good at 3D.
If you can draw and do 3D art, you are that much more valuable to your employer. 3D is subordinate to drawing in my opinion. If you can draw learning 3D will be a lot easier, but not necessarily the other way around. |

Hmm. I'm not sure that 3d work is what I'd even like to do with my future. Honestly, I've changed my mind so many times, that I don't even know anymore. But, to work in the movie industry would be so cool. I know, hehe, that just sounds like a dream. But a good movie is just so magical, woulden't it be great to be a part of that. And get paid a shit-load to do it too? |
