This is a picture digitally painted for a tutorial in a book to come out sometime soon. It was done with a Wacom tablet and a beta version of a graphics program using a reference photo that I took late in the day so that the daylight would not overpower the candle.

There are two sources of light in the picture. Daylight coming from the right and a candle In the midst of the still life.

...some details

The color saturation is a little high for the scene. I noticed that even before looking at the reference image. The back wall also feels flat past the salt shaker.

Your candle reminds me almost exactly of some tutorial I saw someplace ... hehehe. Nice to see you have a style that's consistant. Speaking of the candle, it looks a little out of perspective. I believe it's caused by the upper left portion of the candle, it bulges out a bit more than it should. The cheeze also has a very fake look too it. The separation between the skin and the "good cheese" is too perfect. I'd have to say it;s the least detailed part of the image. The plate is excellent. Another thing that's missing from the candle is a more pronounced reflection of the flame that one would normally see in the glossy, slightly melted top layer. The table also looks exceedingly flat in the foreground, check the shadow off of the red pepper from the candle. The underside of the foreground mushroom is a little too bright as well, especially considering you dulled the window light already. Losses some of the depth.

Anyone else think of the snorks when they look at the stems from the bell peppers? I would of liked the green pepper to retain the ripped off look of the reference to give the image more character. The little "leaves" comming off the base of the red bell pepper's stalk look a little too bulbous instead of the flatter shape they have. The area of the red bell pepper's skin closest to the green pepper has a flat feel as well. The overall shading in that area could be sharper.

Great bread.

I like the image though. I miss doing still life images. I don't think I've done a proper one since junior high. Usualy only studies of specific objects and not the whole scene.

Yeah, I swear I've seen a tutorial on that very candle, Its really well rendered, I suppose I have to be a pro artist to critisize it, but if you ask me its very pleasing to the eye, most of CyberArtist critics are minor, but maybe to a pro they are not.

And CyberArtist I cant believe they remind you of the snorks, I havn't seen that since 1995

Most of CyberArtist's critiques also don't apply. No offence, but I think you were trying a little too hard to come off as sounding professional, CyberArtist.

The tutorial you guys are referring to in regards to his candle was a tutorial he wrote. :P

.. flame on.

I love looking at your pics; they're always so real-looking, not to mention your amazing ability with portraits. Just curious, how long would a piece like this take you?

Thanks for your comment Kelly.

This piece took about 16-18 hours. My portraits probably take twice as long

fleabrain: Nice! One thing though, the pic kinda looks a bit...plastic-y? Nothing to do with your art skills, more to do with using a flat round brush. Have you tried playing around with custom brushes in Photoshop at all? Just to give a little bit of texture in places and take away some of the "mach banding" that appears, especially on the green pepper there. Otherwise, outstanding work as usual.
