I asked a friend what shoud i draw, and she replied "a tank". Then i realized i didn't know a thing about drawing tanks, and it seemed like a perfect topic for a speed painting . So here it is, after 20 minute's work:

I'm quite satisfied with it. Btw, the reference pic was far too small to see the details.

It seems you are creating a lager, paint a few strokes on it, eventually erase excessive parts, and merge them down again?

I'd be very thankful for an answer. I wondering about this point since month ...

Cicinimo Yes, if I remember correctly what I have posted in this thread, there is no ref used. I generally don't use it, but if i need to know something particular, I dig it out. Just how many lug nuts are there on a 52 ford that lost it's hubcap? Stuff like that.



This one, however, is obviously from a screen grab. Don't know what film/show, but she had a neat neck.

Igino, sometimes I do that, not always. The running pirate was done at the rez you see it, with no layers. Bluberry was done with a lot of layers and a lot of abuse.

That is one point of these sketches, to not use the same method over and over again. If you want to be wise and cautious, change one variable at a time. You can get lost flopping around like a fish.

But my old goache sketches looked very similar. You could tell the same person did them. So it might have more to do with that than a technique.

This may be kind of a late rebudle to the argument on the last page but I want to say it anyway. I was watching this show where these old retired people were doing this art and they were all very proud of it. One guy made these huge windmeal sculptures and another made simple prints. None of them had any training and this was very evident but all of them were very happy with what they had done and had a hell of a time while they were making them. They were so much nicer to each other than what I've experianced alot of "trained" artists are. So to both of you, who cares? Draw whatever makes you happy, and don't be afraid to be influened or show influence. I love Sargent and am his biggest fan but that isn't to say he was any better than abstrationists. I know that you all know this because it is very obvious but sometimes I just think that we should be more open minded. I was talking to a good friend of mine the other day about this student art show we went to at Virginia Commentwealth University and we decided that 90% of art is horrible. I don't know what that has to do with anything. Sorry to keep rambling but I want to say one more thing. I read a book on sargent that I bought at the big show that came around DC last November and it talked about him studying under this famous artist. Sargent spent a year? I think just painting with a few other pupils and the teacher would come in weekly and tear apart the paintings. Sargent worked so hard that after a few weeks he had figured out how to do everything right and the teacher had nothing bad to say about him. Sargent didn't love the teachers style and he actually went against the teacher later on in his carreer but my point is that you have to start somewhere. I think thats my point. I am horrible at trying to figure out where I stand, Thank god I'm not a politician.

I just took the shape and added on some grain as I am too lazy to draw any flowers.
