Here's a little painting I did for my folks as a present. It's an image of the shoreline near Fremantle, Western Australia, complete with the oil-rig temporarily docked at the harbour for repairs, a hawk native to the beachs and a bunch of crazy footy players in the water.
Crits, comments and paintovers are all appreciated.

Beautiful! The sky is breathtaking, the whole picture gives you a warm fuzzy feeling inside. One crit though, since the sky is yellow and orange, wouldn't the water reflect those colors a bit more?
And what is this 'footy' those people are playing?
Anyway, great job, I hope I can paint as well as you someday. |

oh, gorgeous. I agree that the sea should reflect the sea more but I really love it this way....it's refreshing. and deliciously contrasted ![](images/smiles/icon_cool.gif) |

Nice colors,
Only thing is the size of the waves appear too big in the distance.(or the center area) It makes the ocean feel rather small.

Cedrian - the photo reference I used had the ocean in a dark purple to blue colour with the ripples falling off to a greyish orange colour from the sky. To enhance the colours and make the scene more vibrant, I made the purple to blue gradient much stronger. As a result, it doesn't reflect the sky as much. Thanks for your input!
Arpan - As said above, it's the Australian version of football where two teams have to kick an oval shaped ball through their goals at opposing ends. To do that, they get the ball of the other team by just about any physical means necessary. We play it because Grid-iron makes no sense to us whatsoever.
madmouth - gosh, it worked! Thank you!
Brain - Oi! Get your own beach! You've got loads up your end of the mainland anyway. Unless you're saying you want a print of the picture.
Yep, I shouldn't be using slang on Australian terms too much. Thanks for the explanation!
Kazz - Never noticed that the scale of the ocean looked that small. Yes, if there was a more even decrease in the wave size as the water goes out the horizon, it would look better. Cheers.
Kanabis - Yep, and err... go the dockers! Heh, one day they just might make it to the finals. Thanks, dude.
Here's the reference image I used. I admit, it IS a paintover, but I did it this way to be quick.

What's that? The Dockers in pre season training? I'm surprised they bother.
(cool pic. I'm kinda relieved that you didn't take your pc down the beach. Still can't figure out where it is exactly.) |

It's great-- but the people are too dark. THe picture carries all the same tones, so when you put such dark people in, if made everything look two-dimensional. Try and lighten them up. |

misssakura - It was bacially a paint-over of the reference image I posted earlier, with more colour added in places to enhance the beauty of the scene.
Muzman - The actual game might as well be training for the dockers. I can't say any more than that or I might get lynched. It;s good that Jeffery Farmers joined our side though. He should make a difference. It's Leighton Beach in Perth, by the way. You know about the oil rig at the harbour, right?
Swany - Victoria's got enough footy teams already!
Awetopsy - glad you liked it!
Neofun - yeah, the people are dark because of the over-exposure on the photographs caused by the sun. I lightened the rest of the scene but forgot about them, so they look like ebony statues. Thanks for that observation! |
