http://www.artrenewal.org/

Thats the best place to go if your looking for the best traditional artwork. Just avoid the 'philosophy' section. That guy is a loony

Also check out Bouguereau's work. He was also fantastic at painting women and pretty everything else

As Light so subtly hinted at, the painting is not so good. Especially in the area of suggestion of form using different shades, stronger contrasts in the light dark, and a consistency in sharpness in the whole picture. The hair looks blurred, while the eyes and other details are razor sharp ...

Immy suggested that you look at portraits in the ARC site which I think is a good idea, but that you shy away from the "Philisophy" part of the site which I think is a bad idea.

In the Philosophy part, you will be introduced to some well known procedures of learning how to become an artist, and the different steps of becoming adept at using paint as opposed to pencil or charcoal. Such as the first part of being an apprentice of an accomplished artist and drawing plaster casts and marble busts as a good way of learning how to spot differences in values of shade to prevent your paintings later from appearing flat. As far as I know there is no way around this stage of learning how to draw form in order to give a more 3 dimensional impression of your subject.

I'd say that your attempt is a valiant one though, and many of the skintones you have painted is really quite well done, I'd say it is the details such as nose, lips, eyes and hair that needs to be worked on. A good start nevertheless ...

Keep it up ...
