I have been lurking on the board for a while and I have finally gotten the nerve to post something. I did this pencil sketch a while ago. I wanted to play with deep shadows and lighting. It's the vampire creature from the Dracula movie. I have no training at all in drawing and just do it as a hobby type thing but I do want to imporve and I was hoping that all you amazing artists could give me pointers and advice. Fire away!!!

i'm diggie this lizard. my only suggestions are to add more definition to the right ear (the vamp's left ear.) and to add more shading to the left side of the right eye to make it appear more round. I love the scales and the... uhh... "teeth" !! very moody indeed. you get a gold star.

Thanks for the comments Frank. When I first found this site, I knew people would be willing to give good crits so I appreciate anyone taking the time to look at my work, let alone comment about it!
Thanks again.

It reminds me of the Orcs, from the Lord of the Rings movie. Vile creatures those.
I think it would be better if you darkened those two white areas up at the top.
Nice pencil work. It's really working well on the skin areas around the eyes and the nose.

I love pencil, and you seem to do a great job with it. Here's the thing-- You need to fix your background. Try going over it again with pencil or better yet using a blending stump if you trust yourself enough. See how much action there is in it? You need to kill that so we only see one shade of black. If you do attempt a blending stump-- be weary not to make everything to blurry. Good luck with it-- It looks great |

Now that you bring that up, it does look like the Orcs from Lord of the Rings! Thanks for the input Steve. I think one of the problems with this particular piece (and I think a problem I have with a lot of my drawings) is that it looks a bit stiff to me. I'm taking a life drawing course in the new year so hopefully that will loosen things up (it was recommended that I take it)

I really like the shading on this , very nicely done. Maybe the eye could use a little
bit more tho, looks just a little flat. Great mood overall. |

you've gotten some good critiques here funky, I would take advantage of 'em. anyway, I thought I'd give some pointers on how to make a "stiff" image seem more loose. take a look at the line of motion in this picture. where's it at? straight down the middle of the vampire's face. a straight vertical line doesn't convey much motion, that's why it seems stiff. in your life drawing class that you're going to take, they're probably going to teach you about the line of motion. usually, you start with this to make sure that the pose doesn't seem stiff. it's usually a simple curve. to loosen this picture up, I think I would some arc to the mouth (imagine it opening it's mouth and roaring with it's lower jaw down where it is except moved either to the left or to the right about an inch.) this makes the line of motion a curve going straight down and then swaying in the direction of the mouth. I might up a sketch in a couple hours. if you need some more reference, look up dynamic figure drawing by andrew loomis. anyway, merry christmas all!

I most certainly will take all the advice giving and put it to good use. I'm really enjoying this forum and the comments I have gotten thus far are amazing!!
I got some Prisma markers for Christmas so I will give those a try too but I really want to improve my drawing ability first. I get frustrated sometimes when things don't come out the way I want them to but I have to keep in mind that it will only get better if I pratice all the time...hopefully, this life class will really help in that regard.

Yes, it definitely reminds me of the orc/goblin mutates from Lotr movie, very well done. I agree with the criticism about the right ear (viewer's right). The detail on the face is superb, great pencilling. |

I'm shocked by the response from this piece. I'm really glad people seem to like it. I'll keep working on the right ear!
Thanks for all the kind words!
