What is art ?

When does a smudge seize to be a smudge and metamorphose into art ?

It's a pretty BIG question, and I'm not the first to ask it ... I'll probably not be the last either ...

Jackson Pollock for example ... "Shimmering Substance"
Large version

Personally I'm with ArtRenewal.org on this, although I know a lot of people feel that there is actually something worth looking at inside these smudges.

Oh well, this blabber should be in the discussions area I guess ...

I think it sucks ,<EDIT>(Pollock that is, and the fact that so many people seems to be suckered by "extreme abstraction" ...) .. I think this PS smudge experiment is non-art .. I think it is still just a smudge, good practice of mixing colours in PS no doubt, but hardly worth displaying in the Finished Work Gallery ...</EDIT>

some interesting responses so far...

for myself, at first glimps of your drawing i saw a sad crow, or some sort of birds head.

as for if its art or not, i'm of the opinion that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. same applies to art.

if some guy can put up a paint of a black dot in the middle of a white canvas and call it art, and the sell it for 10g's, it is obviously 'art' to somebody else.

OLE!

Come on, people. There is absolutely NO call for being rude to this fellow. This is his first art. Obviously, it needs improvement...but whose first try was perfect? Mine certainly wasn't. This is your opportunity to really help someone--someone who needs it more than most of the people who post here. But the best you can do is: "This sucks!", and "This looks like a penis!".

Pathetic.

Now, all annoyance aside, my honest opinion: This is not a very polished piece of work, but obviously you're just experimenting at this stage. I like the colour scheme--you've used some of my favourite colours--but I think it could use a lot more depth, sharpness, and contrast.

One thing you might want to try is using the Paintbrush tool instead of the Smudge tool. That smudge tool stands out a mile away, and the strokes it creates are not very pretty.

I can see where you'd have some really nice, graceful lines going if you developed this more. At the moment, it's way too blurry to make much sense of it, though.

Also, a word of advice--to avoid getting flamed like this, you might want to post quick efforts and unpolished pieces in the Work in Progress forum. You're more likely to get HELPFUL pointers there, rather than rude comments about genitalia.

I agree completely with Socar about this one: no-one draws well in the beginning. Sure, it's fair to give your honest oppinion but you don't have to be rude about it.

It doesn't even look like a penis -_- *shakes head* Tsk...

I'm not sure if it was my post that conveyed the impression that the original post "sucks". I may well be blunt sometimes, and I'm not sure that it needs to be apologised for. But I think I might have been a bit unclear about my "thoughts for afterthought" for Sp-89's brainchild.

I just wanted to point out that I felt that about "art" like that of Jackson Pollock, even though he probably spent a LOT more than 30 minutes on his "Shimmering Substance".( or maybe not .. )

However, I'm not sure it is totally counterproductive to be honest, and I must say that I'd prefer "crit/judgement" straight out, rather than vague, sugarcoated gibberish that leaves you wondering what all that waffle actually meant ...

P.S.
Jackson Pollock blows ... hehehe ...

Just because something does not have any kind of recognizable form in it does not mean it's not art. It's pretty obvious from this post that it was just an experimentation, so "learning to draw" really shouldn't factor into it.

galen: ?

if it was experimentation, then learning to draw has everything to do with it. and yes, i still think it's random crap. still, post some more, i hope you do more than just doodle around in photoshop next time: really work on it next time. i doubt most people here could do anything worthwile in half an hour, so a beginner sure as hell can't. practice.

and if some people see this as a flame, then be my guest. but it's not.

The second you touch anything with love it turns into art. Except maybe your girlfriend...

I too am amazed that people are so unwilling to post their work as work in progress. This could be art but I think you realized that most people wouldn't think so.
It's a bit too abstract to me for sure.
Don't be intimidated by the comments above though. Keep posting your work.

Art is just a way to express yourself, I don't think people should worry too much about what other people think about what OTHER people think...other than making it look somewhat what you were thinking. I know at least I draw for ME...not other people, if they don't like my style then that's too bad for them. I still listen to cits tho, so I can refine things I need work on so I can convey what I'm trying to, but I still draw for me, and to express myself, so screw what other people think...to an extent, just don't get full of yourself and completely block other people's opinions out...and that's my two cents.

Everyone gets five stars to start with, as far as I know (I did and I ain't nobody). You have to be rated down by people to get less

Hey whatever ! Some of that i`ve done are complete garbage. Experimenting is all part of the art process. If the man wants to post a bird-looking-thingamajig then he can !

He`s obviously looking for some viewers to see what he`s come up with.

much like in the matrix
^^there is no penis
