shahar2k:
I'm glad you liked it. Lack of detail.. I know, but the painting was meant to be like this. I wanted to capture the expression of brushing by leaving the painting without deeper detail.
About surface treatment.. yeah i know very well. Every surface has it's characteristic which gives the viewer specific feeling. In this piece it almost seems like the face and coat is the same material. But once again.. This piece was not meant to be realistic.
Dr. Bang:
Thanks. It sounds like the tips are your personal viewpoints and something that _you_ try to achieve (maybe following some artists' foot steps?) Anyway.. I work the way i like And if you think that I make things wrong.. it's just.. your own personal viewpoint. Why share _that_ with me?
ps. there's nothing wrong with with canvas me thinks. ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

No, dr.bang is right. Never work from just white. Either block in your colours first or lay down some kind of base colour that complements the palette you've chosen for the painting. Or both.
Even though you're trying for a brushed effect, it would look a lot better against a more friendly base than intense white. |

definitely a very good piece, seems like it would be a self portrait? you might want to try and go back in with a smaller brush and working on some details in the maximum zoom, lips especially seem to stand out for me as bothersome, you'd want to reduce that highlight's size (got milk?) if you want to make them look shiny, overall it's pretty good, but I think one of the greatest pieces of advice given on this board was by a certain (spooge)demon when he said that you have to treat diffrent surfaces diffrently so that their textures appear seprate from one another, you might want to try and go back in and smooth out the face, and strengthen the forms on it and leaving the rest sketchy, could be interesting. |

nice! Remmeber this, never to start out a pic with a white canvas.
Let say you want to paint the guy, first, draw a blocks of a chosen color then start to shade, add eye.....etc until you're finished. |

Jarno ...
I really hope, assuming that english is not your first language, that it is the reason why you handled this crit so extremely badly.
You are obviously a lot better than many newbees who post their juvenile booger-art-kindergarten-fingerpaintings here. But to not do a bit of research on who you are taking advice from before you brush their professional advice off is simply pathetic. If you knew, you might be a lot more humble, and actually get some more help.
shahar2k / Dr. Bang / Teaweed advice to you is all solid and correct, and by your immature way of responding, you have probably killed off any chance you might get an unbiased reply from many other here on this board. You might be able to reverse this with an apology, but then again, it depends on how you apologise and if anybody could be bothered to look at one of your posts again.
You could off course continue to believe that your errors and flawed methods are just your own groovy "style", and that there is no room for improvement, and try to improve as an artist all by yourself.
As far as I'm concerned, the best and fastest way of learning is to be guided by people who have "Been there! Done that!" |

HawkOne:
I'm really delighted that you commented.
First of all. Shahar2k's comment was good and interesting. Did i say something bad to him? (Nope) Read again.
Secondly about the Dr. Bang's comment. Why to share information I know already? Well I suppose people assume that I don't know anything about art because I just have bought a wacom and that I painted on bright white canvas in a odd way. Of course they start to think "This guy doesn't know..." and give me an advice.
I simply forgot that this is a big forum full of people who haven't got a brightest idea who I am. And I'm really _really_ sorry if I insulted someone.
My stupidy.. as always. Sorry. |

"Why to share information I know already?"
Why? Well, because you gave him basicly NO information about your self. Do you expect him to know you like a close friend right away? Dont think so.
"It sounds like the tips are your personal viewpoints and something that _you_ try to achieve"
But you said you know his tip already.....huh...now you said that was a personal viewpoint?
"(maybe following some artists' foot steps?)"
OUCH~!!!! He must be crying right now. |

Mr. Lonely:
The personal view point is about how you want to do things. He thought that that my painting _should_ be made like that, no other way. I know that you can achieve more pleasant values of colours by having a coloured layer instead of pure white You still don't get it?
And you Mr. Lonely, you should read my post more carefully before replying:
My earlier reply: "Why to share information I know already? Well I suppose people assume that I don't know anything about art because I just have bought a wacom and that I painted on bright white canvas in a odd way."
Your reply: "Why? Well, because you gave him basicly NO information about your self. Do you expect him to know you like a close friend right away? Dont think so."
Our lines mean the same! Why you keep saying things I said before?
Sorry again if I insulted this Mr. Lonely. I just don't see any sense in his reply.
And.. sorry.

heh, that's so typical. i've seen many estonians acting the same way if try to help with some constructive criticism or just you know saying your opinion. They get so offended by that and start yelling at everyone some stupid reasons or explainations trying to prove that they know everything they just didn't want to do it. I suppose finnish people are the same. I think those people are so used to hear only good stuff about their drawings... like from friends or neighbors or parents who cannot draw at all.
And yeah, i know he will get pissed off about my comment also. |

hmm, seems that there are some really immature replys here. Jarno has been polite all the time, but I can't say that about some people..
first of all, I don't like this painting much, but I think it's good for first try. And shahar2k and some others gave some really good comments about it.
Mr. Lonely:
"Jarno, stop acting like a mad man, stop covering your mistake by insulting others."
when did he insult others, huh? That reply was totally uncalled for and useless.
m703-324:
your reply is bullshit. Jarno here didn't get offended and start yelling, or did I just miss that part? he even said he's sorry, twice.
"I suppose finnish people are the same."
oh yeah? Making that kind of generalizations makes you look quite stupid, in my opinion.
"And yeah, i know he will get pissed off about my comment also."
and he probably isn't the only one. How do you call that a comment, by the way? To me it seems that you just wanted to make retarded generalizations about estonian and finnish people.. |
