Hi, I just saw the Kubric movie. I like Kubrics stuff, Clockwork orange was just fun and dandy. However, I have trouble understanding this movie as a whole. Could someone please take the time to explain this crazy movie, and the ending especially. What are those black pillars(??) Intelligence pillars I don't know! Please do give me some insight. And what happens to the guy, when he goes into this hyperspace thingy and turns old....head hurts......need pills again... |

The idea is that the monoliths are placed by an advanced alien intellect . . . they appear at crucial times in man's evolution to guide our species towards an unknown goal.
The ending is open to interpretation, and people literally write college theses on it. Personally, I'm content with it being one of the best pieces of directing I've ever seen . . . the lighting from below, coupled with the editing used to expose each level of aging . . . really terrifying. Far more effective than the heap of effects a more traditional director probably would've thrown at the situation.
"2001" is my favorite movie, but I try not to watch it very often . . . in fact I've probably only seen it three times all the way through . . . I don't want to wear it out |

I went to see this recently, twas good on big screen.
The ending is nice. Those rushing walls look like those parallex scrolling horizon things that always used to be on Amiga demos. But when the ink drops in water start, and the alt. colour helicopter flights I thought *oh dear* this is shameless hippy doodling.
The revolving diamond things looked cool though. Interestingly this was copied in Hellraiser II at the ending.hmm |

This is a very good moive, I frist saw 2010,then 2001, both are good and real.
Though they are old, I think they are much better than some of the sf made recently--crash and boom in the space, heros and beauties--nosence. |

You should read the book before watching the movie, but it's too late now. It all makes perfect sense in the book. |

As I recall, the book was actually written after the movie, and the movie was based on a short story. Everyone I know recommends reading the book, however. It makes a bit more sense. |

2001 is kubrick's homage to the silent film, it was based on clark's short story the sentinel, if you want to understand the movie better read the book. you'll get the star child and worm holes. but still the book is kind of a cliff note to the movie, you gotta watch that movie many times to really catch all the little things kubrick adds. kubrick makes his movies like how great authors write books.
btw, aquamire i like yoru signature.

This short essay got me into film school. . .
Select a creative work a novel, a film, a poem, a musical piece, a painting, or other work of art that has influenced the way you view the world and the way you view yourself. Discuss the work and its effect on you.
It was warm and sunny outside, but I didnt care. As a fourteen year old boy, I was in no mood to be outside doing things. It was just one of those days. So in lieu of physical activity, I decided to rent Stanley Kubricks 2001: A Space Odyssey. Once the film began, I sat plastered to the television for the rest of its duration. I was amazed with the sheer power and beauty of the images floating across the cathode ray tube sitting in front of me. I caught myself twisting my head with the motion of spinning pens and bones and space stations. Needless to say, I found something magical in that film that I had never found in the movies I had seen before. It was not the way that Kubrick said so much by saying so little, nor was it the sweeping and epic sense of depth created by the films minimalist soundtrack. It wasnt the apes beating each other to death either. What really struck me about the film was the scene where Dave is forced to kill HAL. Never in my life, before or since, have I been touched or saddened by a film like I was when HAL tells Dave how scared he is and sings "Daisy." I cannot watch this film without feeling a huge empathetic weight on my chest for HAL as he slips into the universal void of death.
Upon realizing just how it had affected me, I decided that making films is what I wanted to do. To be able to stick my finger into someones brain and touch something without even being present is an awesome power. Whether to empower, mystify, confuse, sadden, or just amuse someone, I want that person to share the intensity I experienced with 2001. To have someone Ill never meet sit down at lunch with a friend, quote lines from a film I created, and share a good belly laugh because of it would be the ultimate satisfaction. There is just nothing like a good movie to make you feel. |

whoa, this is so weird, i just read this novel for my independent novel study in summer school for OAC english. I havent seen the movie yet, but I am not that excited about it. Why? The novel was soo good, and when novels are made to movies, there is a lot of stuff removed to make it a movie. But I'm sure its good, and I'll enjoy it, but the novel was really good!
just my two cents! |
